The correct spec is 5W30 (Ford) - I bought 2x 4ltr Castrol Magnatec ford spec from Halfords for about £42.00 - special offer this weekendMark.

As he says, Magnatec for Ford is the stuff but maybe worth trying here too
10-40 is the spec for the td4 engine used in Freelander and Rover 75 amongst others. Certainly wrong spec for your D3

Want to bring this thread back to life briefly.
A specialist in my area has recommended use of 10W/40 on older D3 TDV6 engines. I politely declined in favour of OEM oil spec recommendation - but is anyone being advised/doing the same thing?

The internal tolerances are too fine in the TDV6 engine to run a thicker 10W40 oil
Stick with the correct grade and spec, or better
Personally, I run 5W30 Fully Synthetic, Low Ash (or D4 oil) in my D3My D3 Build Thread

Madness. Stick with oils that meet or exceed the specifications required. The oil weight is but one factor, the rest of the numbers matter just as much. The TDV6 is intolerant of any variation in oils.

I choose to stick with Magnatec as the happy medium - thanks to Edge, it's not so expensive, yet is still the original spec, so I have complete piece of mind. I agree with you Robbie, but the same engine in a Pug/Citroen has a different requirement in specification
Just goes to show how fine the tolerances are.

Or alternatively try it and see, then let us know how it goes. What's the worst that can happen?

short term probably nothing other than you think you have scored a victory & saved a few bob
long(er) term you could be in for an expensive experience intuit your engine displays signs of premature(or early onset) or terminal wear
The engine oil has to more than you realise...besides doing the obvious & lubricating top end, bottom end main (crank) bearing & camshaft bearings - it also lubricates the turbo(/s) (high speed & very high temperature) & importantly the pistons & cylinder walls each one with its own set of requirements.
The wrong oil means compromise..which means that something isn't going to get its right lubrication & will wear.
I destroyed a V6 B27 Volvo engine by thinking that Duckhams Q20-50 oils was better than the the right spec 10-30...the camshafts were 'effed at 105k miles....from what I was told mine lasted longer than most.
The issue was that oil didn't get to the camshafts early enough...every time you started & warmed the engine through there was seconds of things running dry or dryer than required. Expensive wear.
The replacement engine a similar V6 but from a Lancia Thema (with some fundamental differences) lasted way beyond another 180k miles using the "right" oils.
I didnt use the wrong oil to save money - on the contrary I spent more as I always changed oil at the then service interval of 6k miles. But it got me in the end.
Why risk the possibility of engine wear & possible failure (high cost) to save some few pounds (low expenditure) ? .....OK you may pass this situation on to someone else by getting rid (before you have to)
Use the LR specified oils...they usually know best.
I say usually as they have made a terrible mistake in thinking that Auto gearboxes can have sealed for life fluid (oil)...it is for life but the life is far too short in most cases (in my case 90k miles).
Right oil at right intervals + low cost maintenance & longer engine life. My vehicles are a long term prospect for me so the work done at each oil change pays off years & miles later.
Why take the risk ?.....just to see...BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
