I have to agree it is very poor customer service, I would have taken it to the dealers and left them both keys and the log book and walked back out without saying a word !

If there is no explanation or warning in the hand book then as said above its easier for them to print out a addition rather than fix it !

How the hell are you supposed to leave a tyre for fixing ?

Reading Handbook for RRS which I presume uses same winch -

Quote:
Note: If, for any reason, the spare wheel is not
to be fitted back in its hoist, the wheel hoist
should be rewound as follows.
Position the lifting lug level on the cable and
wind up the wheel hoist mechanism until it
clutches out.

What are they saying you did wrong Confused

Exactly !! And if i had done it wrong (the wrong way being?) how do they prove that is what caused it.

RRS instructions virtually the same apart from the words 'clutch out'. Says something similar but cant recall exact words.

From the MY12 Handbook and there is no extra card in mine Rolling Eyes

Quote:
Note: If for any reason, the spare wheel is not
to be fitted back in its hoist, the wheel hoist
should be rewound as follows.
Position the lifting lug level on the cable, and
wind up the hoist mechanism until it reaches
its uppermost position. This is indicated by a
clear physical jerk from the wheel nut brace
and an audible noise
.

After breaking the winch on ours doing exactly that, I would now loop the end of the cable through the recovery eye (hidden behind the towing cover in the rear bumper) to stop it dragging on the road until there's a wheel to go back on it.

Our local dealer replaced the winch under warranty even though the Disco was over a year old at the time and I hadn't even bought it from them. I think charging for this, from a good customer after 11 weeks is appalling customer service, and very short-sighted for future business!

If the winch has to be under load before it is re wound then your above idea is a good one. If LR know that this is the case then why the hell is it not stated anywhere. There is no info in my dealer pack about it and it certainly wasn't mentioned during the handover.

@HairyDan - Exactly the same as what my book says, difficult to get those instructions wrong IMO.

Or why don't they do what any other Manufacturer would do and modify/improve it? Sorry, I've answered my own question here. It's LR. Too many laurels to rest on!

I had a winch replaced on an old 08 RRS under warranty @ of all places Stratstone Stockton (who I rate as having the worst CS possible).

Done the same as you winched it up with no wheel attached, then it would not come down unless it was pulled at the same time - bit difficult TBH, arms are long but not the long Smile

Whether there's a card or not, a component like this should not fail in a] with such limited use and b] in such a short space of time.
You should have a case under sale of goods act as - 'not fit for purpose'.

When I hand the keys in to the dealer next Wednesday, I think I'll also chuck in all the manuals and ask them to show me where it states that the winch must not be wound in unless under load. I'll then also point out the text on p.227 as quoted above by Hairy Dan and ask them to describe exactly what I've done wrong.

Exactly the same experience for me, except that I now tie the cable to the towbar if not putting the wheel back.
Dealer replaced winch with no question whatsoever. (about 18mths ago)

No card supplied with mine either Shocked Interestingly LR Assit had to do a wheel change for me (decided I wasn't going to expend the energy so called them out!) and they tied the cable to the tow bar rather than reeling it in; I didn't ask at the time why but it sounds as if LR know there is an issue but aren't telling customers until after the even, which coincidentally creates a "nice little earner"
Don't tolerate it - simple sale of goods issue which puts the supplying dealer in the frame, or alternatively go down the route of pursuing LR directly to implement their warranty... it's only once they find that enough customers take direct action that they'll see sense!

No card here either. Pretty worrying that this should happen and even more so that they won't replace even as a goodwill gesture so as to not admit the fault but keep the customer happy.
