Well, was at the dealers this morning.........
Took the manual in and turned to p.227. They took a photocopy and said they would ring LR once they'd inspected the winch.
45 mins later, keys were handed back to me, winch replaced under warranty!!
Service adviser said that they had read the notes in the manual and according to those I hadn't done anything wrong.
Also said they hadn't seen this advice before? The advice that they have been given by LR is completely contrary to what my manual says hence the suggestion over the phone that I had mis used the winch.
They said they would pursue the claim with LR using the evidence from my manual.
I mentioned the suggestion of connecting the wire to the rear tow eye if a spare wheel was not present but this was advised against as it wouldn't be a 'straight' pull if the winch was wound in. They suggested not winding the winch in but to cable tie it around rear cross member until spare wheel is ready to be re fitted.
Happy with the outcome anyway!!

I would suggest that if the winch was not wound up but cabled tied as per the dealer/lr advise and there was an accident associated with this, both could well be in deep water. Vehicle defective, not fit for purpose, parts dangling potentially semi loose. Just a thought in this day an age where everyone will try to get out if everything and blame everyone else. Hi all,
I'm having the same issue with my D3.
07 plate, and just renewed on the Select Warranty....
Dealer not interested in helping other than charge for the work required to fit a new winch.
I've contacted LR and they are claiming that it is not their problem as the car is out of warranty.
My claim is that procedure provided caused the issue and the failure is within the 6 years and reasonable lifetime detailed in the Sales of Goods act and also statutory rights, and this seems to be a known and common problem.
Does anyone have the revised procedure card discussed in this thread, that talks about not using the winch unloaded...? or a pointer to where I can find that update.
LR claim that no such update was ever distributed......
If you have to fit new at your own expense I believe the D4 winch fits & is a better product.

What I am not understanding here is how using it unloaded causes a problem? Whenever you put a wheel onto it the first few turns are going to be unloaded to take up the slack, whats the difference? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I think the problem with these winches is actually caused when the wheel is lowered, the last few turns are winding out the cable when its gone slack, ie the wheel has hit the ground. The cable can then bunch up inside the winch unit, and when its subsequently attempted to wind in, it jams.
You can remove the winch and drill the rivets out to see the cable, and possibly realign it, then use pop rivets or self tappers to reassemble the unit? I have not done this myself, but looking at pictures of one, it does not seem beyond the realms of possibility.

From the MY12 Handbook and there is no extra card in mine

Note: If for any reason, the spare wheel is not
to be fitted back in its hoist, the wheel hoist
should be rewound as follows.
Position the lifting lug level on the cable, and
wind up the hoist mechanism until it reaches
its uppermost position. This is indicated by a
clear physical jerk from the wheel nut brace
and an audible noise.
Still reads the same and no card in mine either, although there are two others, one for towing and use of the tow bar, the other for oil level in a 5 litre v8.Joined the BMWX5 45e group
