17" to 18" or 19" what to do?HELP
hi all, need a bit of advice on wheel and tyre options.
I just got a 57plate gs with 17" 235/70 wanglers!
do i fit wider tyres preferably in AT type (as i do a bit of o/road) on the standard alloys?
what would you recomend.i.e tyre choice?
or do i get larger wheels and fit the wider tyre i/e 255/60/18 or the like.
cosmetically the 17" look a bit toytown and i think the 255 section should make a fair difference in handling especially on the wider alloy.
What do you think.;

well, if yer 17's have good tyres on them, 1st thing you do is sell the boots to me!!!!
might mean running around for a few weeks on yer rims, but nothing like being noticed

There is nothing wrong with the sizes of the standard rim and tyre sizes, many on this forum have been in very extreme places on earth on standard size rims and tyres.

I ran my last one on 18's as delivered and 17's with ST's - I think the wider look/stance of the 18's (and 19's) definitely looks better - I think theres 40mm difference on stock tyres

For an all rounder on a wider rim I'd suggest you go for 18" rims with 255/60/18 General Grabber AT2's, good off road and on and definitely give a more purposeful look 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Just to add it in as no one else has yet.
19" rims look the danglies especially with some nice Goodyear MTR's on them Bodsys Brake Bible
Sell your road tyres to character. But some Cooper STT's from Andy for off roading + Get a set of 19's for road use -sorted
MTR's and AT2's are great, but off-roading you will scrape an alloy at somepoint. May as well clear a space in the garage now "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

As I said, I'll swap a set of 18" style 2 or a set of RRS alloys for your 17's. Both of mine are a set of 5 sp would require the same in returnHONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE

Swap the road tyres for my grabber A/T' s 265/65 0n 17" rims - great tyres but i dont do any offroading now.

At the end of the day it does not matter what you go for. I have seen all types of combinations and the D3 will get you there eventually. I have seen Coopers STT easily get to places that MTR's struggled to and then 1/2 a day later in different conditions but the same place the MTR/s sailed the section and the Coopers struggled. I have seen people drive through sections on standard tyres and people fail with AT2s.
Its recommended that the bigger the side wall the better the tyre is for off road so 17" are the ones to go for, however this really only applies if you are going to go serious bang and crash hit rocks type 4x4ing. 99% of D3 drivers dont do this type of driving (if they did they need a slap) most prefer to keep their car in one piece drive slower and let the electrickery do its stuff.
The only reason er two reasons I fit off road tyres are:-
1) stronger sidewall so less punctures.
2) I fit MTR's that cost about £128 per tyre and they are good for 36k
I think you should simply go for what you like the look of In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
