17" tire recommendation

I am starting my preparations for the winter which is just few months away.

I would like to put new set of rubber on the factory 17" rims. Any recommendation for the tire which would mainly serve in the winter months:most of the time on the tarnac, but around 30% on light offroad with snow, ice, mud, etc.

The choice of factory standard 235/70R17 tires seems very limited. Any recommendations? Another option would be to go for some alternative size, but retaining the original rims is a must! Can 245/65R17 tyres be safely used on the factory rims? (there seems to be the largest choice of tyres in such dimension at least over here in Poland)

245/70's fit fine (and 265/70's too apparently) if you want to go oversize
245/65's are 1.4% smaller than the stock tyre but I'd doubt you'll have any issues The End

The STT is probably too agressive for what you want, i.e. only 30% off road. It's a 20% road/80% off-road tyre.

I'm very pleased with mine though, but I wouldn't want to use them on the tarmac too much. Matt

Yep, they're a great tyre but noisy on tarmac, just turning up the stereo volume seems to cure that problem though

and they're only rated at 99mph.....which hold me back on the M4

Some extra questions to the experts:

1. I am also looking into Cooper ones - which one of the two (HT or ST)would you recommend more for the winter conditions (again - mainly tarmac, but icy, some snow or snow-mud)?

2. Is there any recommended maximum width of tire which can be safely put on the factory 17" rim (as a replacement for the 235/70R17 one)

3. Which one would fit the 17" factory rim better: 245/70 or 245/65?

4. What is the reasonable minimum load rating for tires on DISCO3 V6?

I would go for the HT, as it is 80% road use and it states "Enhanced wet traction and winter performance on snow and ice".
The ST is more for off-road driving.

As for the size, I would get as close to the original size as possible. I have 245/70R17 STTs on my alloys. Matt

Thanks d3matt! The question is which one is closer to the original. Have a look at this data (tire specs, diamater, diameter difference in mm., diameter difference in %):

225/70R17 746,8 mm +14 mm 1,8 %
235/70R17 760,8 mm 0 mm 0 %
245/65R17 750,3 mm +10,5 mm 1,4 %
245/70R17 774,8 mm -14 mm -1,8 %

From this I would actually thought that 245/65 is closer to original then 245/70!

And regarding HT - any idea how it compares to Pirelli Scorpion ATR (I can get this one over here quite easy).

It is closer but I'd always go for oversize rather than undersize if possible The End

I have been looking into winter tyres also and have found a few interesting tyres:

Studless:

Studed:

Nokian Hakkapeliitta SUV in 245/65R17

Doing some more search I found the following winter tyres:

Vredestein Wintrac 4 xtreme

the best fit would be 265/65R17 but I am not sure that this width still fits on 17" wheels.

Can some one tell me what the width of the 17" wheels is?
