19 with MTR Vs 17 with Cooper S/T
Hello everyone
Price aside, what do you recon would be more appropriate considering the following use ?
Disco3 fitted with four 17†with stock tyres (no 5th full size).
I wish to fit year round tyres for the follwing use :
- Everyday car but only 10 000 miles / 15 000 KM on the tarmac per year max
- 6 outing minimum in southern France/northern Spain
- trip to UKs (Billing …) twice a year
- 1 Morocco trips per year 4000 miles / 7 000 KM
I am really considering 17†stock rims with Cooper S/T
- Though I still have to purchase 4 tyres + 2 extra complete
- I can get my hand on 5 brand new 19’ with MRT (though sold as ‘used’)
Both happen to come to the same total amount
Please let me know.
Yes, I did read the different post about 19 AND MTRs but still can’t find my answer.

Although your initial cost is the same, the 17" STTs have the advantage of a cheaper cost to replace the tyres when you wear them out vs. the MTRs. You can also run the 17"s at a lower pressure as they have a lot more sidewall to play with, which is great for sand. Some people have stated that the STTs don't self clear very well (and the Salisbury trip would seem to support that) but others recommend running them at a lower pressure as this lets them self-clear very nicely. Haven't heard any comments on MTRs clogging in mud.
On the flip side, the 19" wheels look a lot nicer.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

MT/R's seems a better all-round tyre, performing well in snow, mud, sand and rocks. As has been mentioned, the lack of sidewall depth could lead to a tyre demounting from the rim although I'm not aware of it happening, pressures are fine down to 20psi too.
I did have the 17" rims and STT combination for a while, they are a very aggressive tread and tend to clog easily - even at lower pressures, although my main concern was the limited clearance betwen the rim & brake caliper and the potential damage if a stone got jammed between them
Sorry......I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

good point ! replacing them will cost less... in a while though
yep, i am talking about S/T, not STT,
as a matter of fact S/T is not a competitor to MTR so i am kind of comparing 2 tyres one should not but as mentioned, i have 2 deals i have to choose from : S/T on 17 or 19 MTRs both same price

I would prefer MTR but I was unable to source some in or around Paris...
Thus I am back on Pirelli... Georgia On My Mind...

I am already fitted with 19" wheels and the MTR, on this website, have a very good reputation as an all around tyre.
Thus, I would have prefered buying MTRs but they were unavailable...
That is why I am driving again with Pirellis. Living in a flat, I have no real and easy opportunity to store a second dedicated set of wheels...Georgia On My Mind...

I run 17 inch rims with the Cooper St. Have done for 14 months. I use the car everday for work, weekends to play in, and this year we did the Croisiere Blanche , all on the 17inch St's
Verdict? Very good tyres & very affordable.
I have 2 spare 17inch rims & JJ on this forum ( My son ) can do very good deal on Cooper tyres, especailly if you collect!.
