the 20" stormer question

Is this the reason there's been debate about which 20's, and which tyres will/wont fit:

The genuine LR 20" alloys, Stormers and Supercharged (VSpoke) are 9.5 x 20" rims. I've just found these copies for sale via ebay:

Ebay item: eBay Item No. 150207417145 - 20" Ino RR312 Storm 5x120 ET53 Silver with 275/45x20 Nexen

WHEEL FITMENT:
Size: 8.5x20" 5x120 ET53

I think the offset is standard LR (which was the other thing being looked at as to how some 20's with 295 were OK)

As you can see, it says 8.5" width. Now these would take a 295/45 tyre (although advertised here with a 275), so would provide plenty of suspension clearance.

I guess my conclusion would be 295/45's on copies (8.5's) is what you need if you want 295 tyres.

And before anybody jumps on me, I dont know what weight rating these copies are, but ought to be 900kg for RR.

Hi Al, sorry but just going to muddy the waters here!
Forgot to reply to you re the width of my Stormers.
Have just dug out my paperwork and they're 9.5"
And with my 295/45 tyres, I have loads of clearance.

As we've said before, the key factor is not in the width of the tyre, but it's in the offset of the wheel.
My offset is 53.

Thumbs Up

But a wider wheel with the same offset will cause the sidewall to not be as exposed over the rim, this might be what causes your 9.5" rim to have more tyre clearance on the inside than an 8.5" with the same offset and tyre fitted.
 Cheers

So Simon, if you're saying a 9.5" rim is going to stretch the carcase out more than a 8.5" rim and therefore not bulge as much; I'd go along with that.
But that puts Al's 'ideal' recommendation out for a 295 best being fitted to a 8.5"
Confused

Hi Ron, OK, confused now, as LR offset is 53. But yours do look like they are out of the arch a bit more than standard, 'cause both my genuine LR RRS 19's and the 20's (both 9.5" wide) I ran had nowhere near that gap between the rim/tyre sidewall and the upright. On the 20's, I couldnt get my finger in the gap (and that was thin side, fingernail against the upright, not the thick way round)

Still, these 8.5's (if that is what they are and its not a typo) might work for some folks.

You're confused? .... well so am I!
Had a look back at the post where the other pics were posted of clearance.
And I've got far more clearance than the pic of the one with the narrower tyre???

I reckon it was just pot luck that mine were ok when I bought them.

I think it does, obviously there is a 25mm difference in rim width vs 20mm increase in nominal tread width 275-295 so I would expect the 295's on 9.5 rims to have more clearance (marginally), than the 275 on an 8.5" rim combo, assuming similar sidewall construction and the same offset.

Stretching the carcass over wider rims is a common racing technique to give a more stable tyre and perhaps where the tread section is limited in the regs....
 Cheers

I agree with Ron re the luck element - i bought my wheels & tyres from the same guy as Ron & my tyres (295/45/20) are a bit closer to the top of the arm than Ron's. That said i had no rubbing issues & they handle as well as the 19's that came off.
