2005 D3 v8 Gearbox Problems |
|
I recently bought a V8 Auto D3 with 168 000 km on the clock.
It seems to "hold " in certain ratios, and occasionally, when stopping and pulling off from a stop sign or traffic light, there is an alarming "clunk" as it seems to engage first (?) gear.
I've been told that a gearbox oil "flush" coupled with a software reset will sort this, but have also been told that the "flush" is not a good idea as it has resulted in outright failure of gearboxes in some instances.
Is this procedure part of the LR service requirements, and if it is, surely my car (with full service history) would have had this done? If it is a standard procedure, when ought it have been done or is it still to come? - some guy said the oil in the gearbox is good for 300 000 km?!?
Any comments/advice would be appreciated. 1998 Disco 1 V8 A

The gearbox is supposedly sealed for life , but in reality it does need changing and if it has reached the stage that it is showing the symptoms that yours is , flushing as well . Try take it elsewhere if it is out of warranty , as the stealers will charge about R9 k to do a flush

Yes there is , but I suspect a flush will be needed as well . Maybe do the patch first and hold thumbs

AFAIK the flush sorts out the shudder in 2-3 gear uphill, but does nothing for the clunk. yes there is a software patch, but you should also check the lower front wishbone bushes on a vehicle this age

I think failure after flush is related to the wrong ATF being used (one in Oz was with Penrite SIN ATF) and some very high milage vehicles.
I have the same symptoms and have just done a flush. Picking it up today so I will see how it goes. ZF ssaid judder in 2-3 may be fixed by flush but if it doesn't fix it, it will be a gearbox or valve issue. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

The propshafts and carrier bearing were replaced along with new lower front wishbones.
There is still a "shoose" /whine/hum right from pulling off, not too obtrusive, especially not at high speed. Any ideas? Diff or gearbox? 1998 Disco 1 V8 A

I also have an 05 V8 and a double oil flush is a great idea. My independent dealer in Perth, who owns and runs D3's (i.e. knowlegeable), recommends a double gearbox flush every 80 000 km. I had mine done recently with 80 000 km on the clock and the oil was black and past its sell by date. The dealer also adds "smart blend anti shudder" to the oil. Gear change is silky smooth now
I think most gearbox problems are caused by lack of lubrication. The idea of sealed for life is DUMB as anyone with a marginal knowledge of chemistry knows that oil (any type!) deteriorates with heat and time. Discoroy,
The sound you describe is what my D3 had,and it whas the rear diff.According to Centurion Gearbox Centre the rear diff make a noise from pullaway and the front diff is a highspeed sound..from 120 upwards.Replacing the rear diff cured the noise.
Good Luck!!!!

Hi CaverD3
You mentioned problems Quote:I think failure after flush is related to the wrong ATF being used (one in Oz was with Penrite SIN ATF) and some very high milage vehicles. with this oil in Oz.
Can you elaborate on what the problems were?
