D3 91k miles. Generally well maintained, had all fluids changed when purchased when purchased, gearbox transfer case, diffs etc. Gear changes are fast and smooth. Oil levels all ok.
When starting and until engine gets to temp I get this noise when the vehicle is in drive. In neutral it goes away. Seems to be worse when stopped on a hill, facing upwards. Sounds like a slipping, rubbing. Eventually goes away when engine gets to temp.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

hmmmm very odd, can you tell what area of the engine it is coming from? is it auto or manual?

Thanks for the reply.
It’s an auto. Sounds like it’s coming from the rear of the engine bay. I wondered if it could be the tourque converter? No gear slipping or problems with drive though.

Does the ecu have a different mapping than standard?
I have heard this sound with tuned mappings… on a single turbo TDV6, in that case i heard the turbo actuator on a cold(er) engine going open, close, open, close etc… Best regards
Harold

I'm not aware of any changes to the ECU, not by me anyway. The previous owners only drove it 5/6k per year. I've had it just over 1 year and the issue has only started the last few months, it seems to be getting worse.

Have a look at the auxiliary belt tensioner.

I replaced this in the summer last year. I've had a look at it when it's running and the sound doesn't appear to be coming from there. I did wonder if there could be condensation forming on the belt and it causing it to slip. The warming of the engine would evaporate any moisture hence the noise eventually going away, but this theory didn't fully add up. I will check it again to see if it's worked loose or there is any more belt wear.

LR changed this last year too. Unless they screwed it up or it's all leaked out. Surely would have more drive line symptoms, juddering and slow / late changes etc.
