my 2008 TDV6 HSE - the (hopefully long) journey begins

hi folks,

Greetings from Serbia and a proud owner of one moody Disco 3.
After owning mostly new cars (520d, M135i, Octavia VRS, 320d coupe...) and being super disappointed with the automotive industry and the idiotic money you are asked to get anything half-decent considering it's 2020, and also with my love for maintaining cars (owning a '66 Mini, '66 Triumph TR4A and a '70 mk1 Escort), i decided to bite the bullet. Sell my 2016 that i've spec'ed and driven for 5 years and buy a much older and much more unreliable LR.

It comes from a second owner (hopefully), 207k km on the clock, and very very good overall nick for its 12 years of age.
Test drive showed slight box judder, but hey, new TC and a service should cure it right.
Fell in love, bought it for close to EUR 10,000.

And just to show me who's the boss now, it decided an hour and 45 minutes into my ownership to light an expensive amber light.
C1131-92 Air supply.
C1A20-64 Pressure increases to slow when filling reservoir.
Getting all bouncy and all over the place, but tomorrow should see a new amk compressor that will hopefully have me smiling for many thousands of kilometers.
Gearbox will see its (i assume first) oil change as well, in 3 stages and will get filled with dr.Tranny shudder fix, hoping i will delay a rebuild (which will be a factory replacement - "Tausch" as the Germans call it - box from ZF directly).

Despite the silliness it's showing since the very beginning i think this will be a love relationship.

Besides the regular service, fixing air suspension and gearbox, engine is super strong and not showing its age, but certain things should/will be done:
- converting it to 7 seater (need to find d-pillar trim with both speaker and seat belt holes) - seats themselves are easy to get
- since no central display, it'll get an android 10 and a rear-view camera (maybe even a 360 one), although i was considering original retrofit, but fear cost will be too high sourcing all the oem stuff for basically only an off-road screen as navigation is obsolete.
- change horrid old Conti winter tyres (that turned concave on rear) with Bridgestone Dueler A/T 001
- new fog lamps
- auxiliary heater control box
- polish and protection

already fixed driver's armrest and centre cubby hole release mechanism, clonking seat rails next Very Happy

Well these d-pillar trims are very common on ebay... maybe the belts also BUT even more the airbags For the third row..would be far more difficult I presume...
Since you maybe put your kids there...

Since you seem to have the 6cd radio, MOST is in your motor... a D4 screen can be good option
I just fitted one and bought for 80 Quid.. i like the 4x4 screen, radio on display, phonebook (sometimes), compass, etc...

There is a good topic here (from flack) how to do it.. Rather easy job, although you might need a MOST Y-cable...

Wow, never would have guessed that already most of the stuff is in the cd changer thing! i do like the offroad screen, and really like keeping it original! Bluetooth connectivity works as it is now - a bit stupid to scroll through though, but hey, it's 2008, not 2020 android auto or apple carplay. Will have a look, cheers!

as for the air bags - would be amazing to find them, but i'm not overly fussy for those ones, as it will be occasional use only, as for the seat belts, seems to be quite a few of those on ebay together with the seats... haven't seen the trim with speakers tho.. but give it time.. Smile

would like to get it looking a bit more off-roady, but still need to make up my mind which way to go

Yes a regular IID BT is fine the pro version is only really if you are providing services to others or operate a garage

So, i've had a new AMK compressor fitted, working as it should, very nice. Still a bit choppy over sharp small creases on tarmac, suspect front lower large bushes that are made of orange poly together with ruined small ones - will be putting new Lemförder ones.
As for the gearbox - well it received its 1st new 5 litres of atf oil since it left the factory and it worked! Almost all of the slippage and shudder gone! Well. Yes, for 400 miles. Back to the usual... slight grinding at 80kmh, on-and-offing with slippage, but the fact it stopped for 400 miles gives me hope - full flush, new metal sump and filter and 2 tubes of shudder fix will hopefully make it go away at least for some 20k miles (roughly 2 yrs in my case) until box rebuild is in order...

Managed to fix the rocking driver's and passenger's seat runners with the standard cable twisting method, seems to work fine now.

Finally when installing the cable for AUX to be permanently connected to the wires before the actual socket in the centre console i did experience "low power mode" - so i guess battery is soon to get all manky.
I understood that Exide EA1000 is the way to go...

Still awaiting arrival of the metal sump and filter so i can do the flush with fresh Ravenol 6HP and fill it with shudder fix and atf protectant.
Tyres also on their way - went with Bridgestone Dueler 001 A/T - made most sense from both price and review side for the usage they'll see.
Managed to source rearmost seats and belts, and decided not to bother with D pillar trim, but rather make a precise cut with Dremel tool and put this C pillar seat belt guide trim bit:



Kids are ecstatic about the 7 seat option! Very Happy

Last Saturday Disco saw its first offroading (judging by the lack of branch scratches) in 208,000km
The destination chosen was Deliblatska pescara (Deliblato sands) - the largest sandy terrain in Europe, part of prehistoric desert known as European Sahara.

Disco 3 was joined by a friend's lovely 1975 SIII 88" that i've shared many memories (2019 Transfagarasan without clutch Smile )

Considering this was my first offroad experience, i was amazed by its capability despite wearing fully worn Conti Winter tyres.

Can't wait for the next one!

new tyres and annoying TC judder sorted!

After the adventure it was clear that the box either needed new oil, filter and additives - or in case it didn't work a new TC or a factory rebuilt unit.
Also, tyres were long gone and waited a month for a new set of shoes.

i am yet to know for sure if the 2 doses of Lubegard Instant Shudder Fix and 1 Lubegard ATF Protectant actually work more than just for a few hundreds of km, but the results so far are astonishing!

with the previous 5l atf fluid drain and 5l of fresh Ravenol 6HP, the symptoms of slipping TC clutches were largely diminished and it was much better than before the change, but it did last for 300-400km before going back to its old self - judder judder judder slip...
Now (too early to say for sure) but it is with 0 symptoms of worn TC or transmission!
let's hope it keeps it that way for many 10s of thousands of km.
Planning on oil changes every 30-40k km, so let's see how it goes.

As for the tyres - fitted Bridgestone Dueler A/T 001 255/60R18 and they seem lovely for now. Super quiet and soft on the road, even at 130kmh. Maybe a bit less grip with faster corner entry compared to 265 semi slick winter ones i had, but that's expected. Overall super satisifed and can't wait to get them dirty!

Plus i've order it IID Tool BT, decided to go with Android 10 instead of a D4 display, rear parking camera, front dvr, t-max compressor, towbar and harness, fbh timer, and am considering Uncle Ray's sumpguard...
At some point perhaps a Prospeed roof rack, LED bar and rear ladder, but taking it one by one Smile

Nice treads

Some good looking treads on those tyres Luka.

We've got Goodyear Duratrac, and boy do they rumble.

Have an almost full set of 19" alloys as back ups so am thinking what to clad them with.

A bit like you though, our motor has played up from day 1 and been in the workshop longer than its been on our drive (not joking, presently in on visit no.3 which is now into its 3rd week at roughly £1000 per week).

All good fun!
