2012 Disco 4 vs Early Disco 4
I notice that the 2012 Disco 4's (with the 8 speed auto and the 255BHP engine particularly) are coming in at around £5,000 more than vehicles slightly older.
So what I mean is all other factors similar (mileage, spec) they jump from £15,000/16,000 to £20,000/21,000 - circa 33% premium for a one year newer car.
I can't seem to find reliable reviews on youtube and the other usual places that compare the 2012 disco 4 to earlier ones.
Can anyone with direct experience of both(ish) vehicles give me any feedback please?D3 07 SE - still going strong

I found the same thing when I bought my D4 TDV6. I have driven a 2014 version and the 8 speed gear box is a lot smoother than the 6 speed I've got, but that wasn't enough to justify the premium for me.

Yeah Villager, that's kind of good to hear. My D3 is a third car at the moment and SWMBO and I are in debate at the moment as to whether to upgrade/change the D3 for her car and move up in budget and if so where about's we put ourselves?
Are we looking for a one year car as a stepping stone or straight in with a £30,000 purchase?
Is the "stepping stone" a 2010MY low mileage or a 2012 at this premium?
I wonder if there are any former owners of 2010/11 vehicles now in a 2013/14 vehicle that could highlight the differences.D3 07 SE - still going strong

I went from a 59 D4 to a 63 D4. 6 speed to 8 speed.
Yes smoother, infotainment slightly better in my GS variety (e.g. DAB) and and car all round is a bit more refined but not sure its worth 33% more like for like. The 6 speed was a more than capable box.
Everything else didn't change that much IMO - slightly more HP but not that noticeable.

I prefer the 6 speed box for off road use. The 8 speed is nicer on road though and a tad more economical.
I really liked my 2010 D4 HSE though. It's the only one of my Disco's that never had any issues. Pot luck I know, but somehow it felt the most well put together.
I went from 2010 HSE to 2014 HSE. Was it 33% better? No. Although other factors need to be considered, such as depreciation and how long you intend to keep the vehicle for.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

I know I'm tempting fate but the only additional service/maintenance things present D4 (MY11 6 speeder) has had done in 45k miles & 6 3/4 years is one puncture and a change of crank battery. The file for the D3 at that stage was about 2" thick, New Dee just has a few invoices and stamps in the service book. This car has been well looked after and not flogged to within an inch of its life off-road in 20 countries on 2 continents.

I had a 2010 for 2 years and have had my 2014 for 18 months, in reality there's very little difference, yes the 8 sp box is nicer but there's absolutely nothing wrong with the 6 sp, still a lovely smooth box.
Other than that, the reverse camera was better on the 2010, and that's about it, I certainly wouldn't be put off an earlier one again if it was going to save me £5k!

I noticed the same when I purchased my 2010 a few years ago. The price difference was the same then.
I went for the 2010 car as I didn’t want to tie up that much cash in a car, and since then, I’m happy with my decision, and I would do the same again.
I think the 2010-2012 cars really are great value at the moment. I guess if you can get one with under 62k, you would be able to get a fairly solid WD policy with it ( or one which has a policy you can transfer with higher mileage for piece of mind)
I find the 6 speed box great. It doesn’t hunt for gears around 70 like the 8 speeds does if on and off the gas, just stays locked in 6th. I think it’s worse in the lower gears though. I don’t have any hesitation like some of reported, but not sure if that’s 8 speed only or 6 speed only or both.

Same here, it was around 4k extra jump for me to go from my 2011 6 speed to the 2012 8 speed, I will very likely make the move in a few years but for now the 6 speed is fab Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.

Think you will find 8 speed box slightly better on mpg.
However 1st MY12's 8 gear boxes also came with a stat nav from hell (extremely slow to use) and a slower rear windscreen wiper (not a biggie)
Also MY11 HSE's all had HBA fitted as standard, deleted MY12 onwards and a cost option only. (some like it, some don't)
For me the loss of HBA which worked very well for me was a bigger loss than the gain from having a 8 speed gearbox. Also found it a handy place to rest hand on stick when elbow on cubby box with 6 speeder.
Also seem to remember surround camera quality went downhill with the 8 gear models.D4 Landmark MY16 Santorini Black THE LAST

I recently had the very same conumdrum as found a low mileage very tidy 6 speed and an average mileage 8 speed both HSE and looked closely at both but I honestly didn’t think 8 speed gave any more really was a little smoother but when I have a pickup (66 Navara) as a work truck it’s like silk
I think better to go on condition and what really wanna spend I don’t think earlier 8 speeds at the price premium are worth it. I couldn’t stretch to a 13/14 plate to make worth while jump to stop start for tax.
It’s if you can justify it to yourself and feel worth it! But I now have a 10 plate D4 on drive and no regrets
