23 hours to identify loss of compression?

can this be right - to identify loss of compression in one cylinder I'm looking at 3 hours for compression test then 20 hours investigation ? at 140 quid an hour....

If my sums are right that's £3220.00 Shocked

I'm far from expert but that sounds outrageous - obviously main dealer at the price per hour

Not sure, 3 hours for compression check may well be right by the time they have stripped out done checks and then put back together. I know my original D4 59 plate had lots of issues and ended up with a new engine. This involved LR techs coming out to support the dealer and compression checks were done but that did not take that long in the overall picture. I suggest you need to find out what they intend to do in the other 20 hours to see if that is just.

Probably taking the head(s) off to check the valves which means the body off Shocked
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

after 11 months trouble free motoring I'm thinking about jacking this in and going back to company cars.

ha! Yes indeed. I knew what I was buying into I just hoped I'd be one of the lucky ones. After years of owning KTMs I'm used to non compliance of motor vehicles, it's just not normally so expensive. Shocked

Hmm get yourself a compression test kit and ID the cylinder

Once cylinder is known it can only be leaking injector seal , ring bolloxed , scored sleave or dodgey valve
Those all give tell tail signs if you read up so you can identify or eliminate
This will then allow you to ask for a more finite service or if poss fix yourself .

There are other possibilities like timing chain jump and head gasket borked etc but eliminate the above first .

Seen these for £18 somewhere for a diesil , the one below is inadequate just for an ex

they are talking about talking engine out/ body off. I'm hoping if it was a straight forward as you say (I'm not eliminating any possibility until the dealer justifies themselves so not doubting you) that this course of action would be taken. Perhaps naively

Thats default from a dealer and a few indies lol, they want body off and £1200 to do my brake pipes lol
Cleaned them and greased em this weekend after finding only slight surface rust and no pitting

walk away from the Main Dealer and get yourself to a local recommended indie. Hourly rate will be half that or less and they will probably get it done in half the time...

update - 10 hours to get body off, 2 hours spannering and 10 hours to get it back on.

zero compression in front left cylinder, 300 psi in other 5.

reassuringly they said worse case scenario is new engine....

got 20% off bill.

You say reassuringly worst case new engine - assume you have a warranty?

ah yes it was gallows humour

I do however have a warranty with Warranty direct albeit not for 100% of labour costs but the 20% discount makes it easier to swallow (whilst being shanked over a barrel)
