255/50/20 v 255/55/20

Hi guys, apologies if this has been answered before.

Fairly new to the forum but wanting to look at options when I need to replace the current 255/50/20 Pirelli Scorpions that came fitted when we bought it.

I like the look of the AT3, and looking to maybe fit 255/55/20. If so do you have any issues with the increase in profile etc.

I believe quite a few forum members are running different, non OE size tyres, but having never tried a different size from OE I am slightly nervous.

This does not directly answer your question, but after much research I decided to go with 285/50R20 on mine (R2 SUV winter tires...will mount the Cooper LTZ or some equivalent when the summer comes). The only cars that have experienced no rubbing had ET53 rims according to this and other forums. So I made sure I had the same and sure thing, no rubbing, not even in access mode on lock (reverse or forward). Since the diameter and width is bigger than what you are trying to put on I would say it could work. If you have other rims than ET53, change or do the calculation and see if it falls withing the 285/50R20 on ET53 rims. If not, I would guess you would have some rubbing problems.

I fitted 255/55/20 grabber AT to mine about 18 months ago (maybe more?). No mods and no rubbing so no problem.

Because the rolling circumference is slightly larger, the speedo now reads pretty much bang on to what an external sat nav says I'm doing, and it appears that my fuel consumption has increased. However, in reality consumption has stayed the same over the same journey that I do every week.

I prefer the look of the 255/55 profile tyres over 255/50 but I guess that's just a personal thing.

Can you use 255 55 20 as a spare, does it fit between the chassis rails ok?

I run 255/55 AT3s. Look the business, more comfortable, more sidewall so better rim protection.

Only downside is that my mpg appears to have dropped a bit. But I think that's down to the speedo being more accurate so the mpg computer isn't lying anymore. But then my logic may be wrong.

I didn't buy a spare though and when I had a puncture is was very unsettling having a 255/50 on for ye few miles I drove it.

Assume there was no problem using the 50 profile spare?

I too am weighing up the 255/55R20 tyre option, my original 255/50R20 spare is unused so do I need 4 or 5 new tyres.

Well it worked but it felt funny under braking and I wouldn't have wanted to go far/fast.

I haven't bought a fifth yet but I will. Problem with these tyres is that you'll always need to order them. It's not like you can have a puncture, drive to quick fit on the small spare and get a replacement there and then.

Having decided to purchase GG AT3 255/55/20, i thought i would buy 5 so i have the correct spare but i found that it won't fit up underneath. No problem with width between chassis rails, the problem is distance or 'lack of' between the rear cross member/tow hitch socket and the plastic exhaust heat shield.

It will just fit almost fully deflated, but you would need to carry a 12v compressor, this is no good as the silly TPMS is only too happy to tell me that i have a flat spare tyre!!

So a wasted purchase of the 5th tyre, oh well you live and learn!

It won’t be a waste when you need it. I’d rather carry a deflated spare with a compressor than have to drive any distance with the wrong size on. It felt horrible/dangerous.

A 255/55x20 is the almost exactly the same size as a 275/45x21 (255/55x20 is 31" dia, 275/45x21 is 30.7" dia), and I have a 21 underneath as my spare (brand new so full tread, not worn), and its fully inflated. Yes its tight but it fits.

Just wondering if its because yours is a GG AT3, and the block tread is more agreesive (bigger) than a normal road tyre (mine are Scorpion Verdes), so not so much the size thats a problem but the tyre type.

Other week garage rang me to say new 255 55 20 spare would not fit in the spare hole.

Went down had a look and had it tucked up snugly 10 mins later.

First the plastic heat shields need a good shove towards the exhaust pipes.

Second you need to wind the wheel up with the the edge of the tyre resting firmly against the plastic heat shield. To begin with put it slightly on diagonal against heat shield and wind up, keeping pressure of tyre against heat shield. It will then level itself and fit snugly in. Must admit doing this for the first time is probably easier with another pair of hands helping, one can wind, the other can guide and watch wheel into place.

If you just wind tyre up from flat on floor it tends to lift it opposite way and gets caught on the rear bumper side and will jam.

Thanks for the advice chaps, i will revisit this at the weekend and try again.

lespes, is your spare tyre a GG AT3 as well? they do seem to have very deep tread.

If this doesn't work, i might be looking for one that only has about 3mm left on it!
