275 65 r18 Maxxis Bighorn

hi guys,

i am looking at putting on some 275 65 r18 Maxxis Bighorn muddies on my Disco 3

they will be on my second set of rims and just for trips/weekends

i have some johnson rods so have a lift

im pretty sure they will fit after doing some reading

has anyone had experience with these? brand? size?

Hi Jimjamm,
Yes you definitely need the rods, you will find they will touch at the front of the rear wheel wells.
You will need to trim back the seam that is behind the inner guard.

If you have rear AC you will need to re route the pipework away from next to the seam you will be trimming.
Also on full lock the front tyres will most likely foul either the chassis rail or at least on the passenger side you will need to move the electrical loom that runs on the side of it.

Do you have a spare wheel carrier? As the spare will not fit underneath the rear of the D3.

Damn,

that sounds like a bit of effort!

how hard is it to re route the pipework and wires?

are there any bigish sizes that may not need any mods like this?

If you want an 18" mud tyre, 275/65R18 is the smallest I've found. There are some relatively aggressive AT's in 18" that are smaller - BFG AT 265/65R18, Cooper Zeon LTZ 285/60R18, Cooper AT3 and Mickey Thompson STZ 265/60R18.

I've got Maxxi Bighorns in 17s (265/70/17)



Never noticed any rubbing - a good tyre IMHO
maybe getting a set of 17" rims might be easier / cheaper than modifying AC pipework / trimming arches etc.

Thanks for that. I have a v8 so can't get 17s over the disks.

when you say re route the pipework, do you mean just manouver and cable tie it so its out of the way?? is it that easy (or similar?) or are we talking about fabricating new pipes etc???

i see the loom, that doesnt seem that hard to move out of the way...

Go the Cooper LTZ 285/60/18. Big tyre with no modifications required.
They do rub slightly on the front chassis rail on full lock while reversing only.

I like the idea of the Cooper Discoverer STT 275/65/18s - any experience with these?
Dico4SE - do your LTZ 285/60/18 fit fine without rods?

Hi Will,
I haven't had any personal experiences with the Cooper STT's, however mates have had them and have been happy.
My LTZ's do rub on the front chassis rails on full lock but only in reverse and not all the time. They do fit fine without Rods.
Expected sum 'humming' at certain speeds. Although they are an AT tyre, they are reasonably aggressive.

Thanks for the reply.
You say your mates have no prob's with the 275/65/18's, which are 15mm larger in diameter than your 285/60/18's - but say that yours do rub a little... Do your mates have rods - otherwise surely the larger tyres would rub more than yours?
I do intend to fit 30mm spacers - do you think this would make the difference?

Sorry mate. When I mentioned that mates have had the STT's. They were on other vehicles in different sizes, not the 265/65/18's on a Discovery, that you were referring to.
If they are 15mm larger in diameter than mine, then yes you will need to do some modifications.

Hi Craig.
I should have made my original post clearer. With your guidance, now all clear - I'm gonna go for BFG's t/a ko's 265/65/18's, which are just 2mm bigger than yours, and 30mm spacers. Even allowing for manufacturing discrepancies, like knobbly side lugs, I think I should avoid any issues.

Mine stick out 20mm wider than the original 255/55/19 as it is.

Hi Craig.
Does your caution with spacers point to the fact that the tyres would then stick out perhaps up to 60mm more than the original, thus causing legal or 'highway code' problems, or because of the extra stress it would put the bearings, etc, under?
