2nd set of wheels/tyres for off road use |
|
I'm thinking about buying a second set of wheels and tyres for off road use, but have a couple of questions for the tyre gurus amongst you:
1. Is there much difference between 19" or 17" wheels for off road use?
2. If I go for 17" LR wheels will they fit straight on my HSE without any modification?
3. With 19" would probably get the MTR tyres, what would you recommend for the 17"?
Any other thoughts/comments would be appreciated

err About 2".....
The general concensus is that of you are doing hard core offroading, then the 17's will give you more sidewall to absorb the terrain.
Although many prefer the 19 (as I do) but i don't do extreme. Having said that, there are some pretty extreme things that some on here have done on 19's with no problems.

Yes, unless you have the V8 or yoiu have modified the brakes

ST for mixed road/offroad use or STT for off-road use (although at least one member runs these all the time, but they're too noisy for me). But as you want them as a second set, then the STT's are very good. Bodsys Brake Bible

19" for me on my D3.
It is a V8 Otherwise I would take 17" More rubber is less problems, is my opinion. Roel

Just shod mine with 255/70/17 Grabber AT2's and very pleased with the ride, bit larger than standard so slightly more clearance off-road too. Also they don't rub at all!!
Also just in the process of acquiring some 255/55/19 MTR's for more muddy conditions 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Thanks for your replies
I think I'll probably go down the 19" route with MTRs - I guess they'll give a better ride on road than 17" Coopers if I don't get round to putting the Pirelli ATRs back on immediately
Just need to find some and then the funds to pay for them
