30 years of Series & Defender ownership - first fall into D3

OK, I admit it - I should have spotted lots of things!

I've owned Series and Defenders constantly since 1987 plus a 300Tdi D1, TD5 D2 and currently a V8 D2. But I've just sold my 1995 110 CSW and used the same money on a '05 D3 SE. I've owned it a week but I've barely seen it, much less driven it, as the (friendly) workshop are still making it ‘right’. "It's a good 'un!" they keep telling me - whilst the new bits keep being delivered.

Having nothing to benchmark it to, I didn't notice the lack of oomph and the black smoke coming out the back when pressed hard (probably because I don't usually press hard - I can get 32mpg from a 300TDi 110). I didn't spot the sticky film of oil under the engine cover around the turbo. I thought the steering was fine. I had no idea it was so expensive to fit a tow bar.

OK; the stack of black box errors, reduced power and film of oil were all down to the same thing. Not, thank heavens, the turbo but a split hose connected to it. First panic over then. But then they moved on to wanting to centralise the steering wheel, which means doing the tracking, which means two steering joints and a pair of good tyres. Oh, and working number plate lights, a full set of working rear lamps and a rear wiper with some rubber on it (so much for the day-old MOT). Oh, and the propshaft bearing. Shall we match the recently replaced compressor to the vehicle to stop these other errors? Oh yes, and the tow bar. And a set of un-mashed wheel nuts.

Well, why not? It's only my money I've already spent buying the thing.

Apparently, I'm due to get it back on Monday. Apparently, it goes like a non-smoky stinky thing off a greased shovel now. Apparently, there's a Bill waiting for me.

But.

It does look nice though…

Got to say I have run land rovers for a few years (not 30 though) and out of the 3xtdi discos, 1xtd5 disco, various series and a 200 defender the D3 has been almost trouble free in comparison.
It has its moments but only std running repair stuff that comes with any car.

Hi Mike_A4

Welcome to the D3 and thanks for your refreshing witt!! Whilst D3 ownership might seem scary at first, and at times perhaps even a bit frightening. In the fullness of time I predict you will come to really appreciate this fantastic vehicle. Personally, no other manufacturer in my opinion can come close to replicate the sheer capability and brutal strength of the D3/4. You really have to forget everything you knew before about LR, as this vehicle was a watershed moment in the brands development. You might perhaps think of it as the spoilt child, who throws all the toys out of the pram, and flashes up every warning light when all that is wrong was a dodgy brake light bulb!!

The better part of my life is behind me now, and I doubt I will ever change from this super capable machine, despite its foibles. I have driven almost all of the D3's contemporary alternatives, and indeed worked on most of them. BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, and the other Nippon offerings. I'm here to tell you they don't clap a patch on the D3 or 4 for strength, comfort, willingness and ability, and robust aesthetics!

Yes you will have to spend a chunk of cash to get things straight, and you will spend probably a grand in most years of your ownership, but what a remarkable machine. Welcome to the LR Oracle, and many happy years of ownership.

"once a month you'll wish you kept the 110 "

Stew, I'm ready for that - I still have an ex-MOD 110 V8 GS. And if I have an urge to go even earlier, there's a Series III RAF Ambulance in the barn too. Yes, I am the Full Anorack.

Finally was allowed to have it back this morning. The trailer electricals will be done on Thursday, but for the moment - it's done. The final bill was £1500 (well, it wasn't - I was owed a number of favours by the workshop, so it was a lot less than that) so I just hope that's the worst over. For a while.

What a difference though! A tad lively.
