Hopefully I'll never find out how my Smart performs in a crash & obviously there is no question that I'd rather have a crash in a D3. However the Smart has some very clever design features to protect it's occupants. It's true though, that the "nut" shaped safety cage is so strong that the human body is unlikely to withstand the shock of a high speed crash. I'd take my chances in a Smart over most small cars though.
Our Smart get used everyday as it's just so brilliant for nipping about in with one or two occupants & a dog in the surprisingly useful boot space.
There is actually more head & leg room in the Smart for me (6ft7") than in the D3. Most importantly of all though is the Smart (with wider wheels) is such fantastic fun to drive, very direct steering & surprisingly fast off the line.
I wouldn't be without one & with the likes of Gordon Murray & Stirling Moss etc. being enthusiastic owners, I like to think that I'm in good company.

I like the pic of the one in the snow- what do you think are the chances of landing in that position ?

The same kind of thread (about SMART cars) came up on a previous forum I was a member of. Here's an indication of what happens when of these things hit anything of any size or have an accident...

They're not so smart when they catch fire either?
