I would like to replace our D3 V8 with a D4 but I'd prefer to stay on petrol. Budget £15-20K. We could take a punt buying blind from South Africa but after a moment of creative contemplation (several glasses may have been consumed) I thought "why not rescue a blown up D4 and fill it with 5.0 V8 RR bits?".
There seems to be a steady supply of blown up D4's for say £6k, but how complicated is such a transplant? Engine with ancilliaries, box (presumably?), fuel system (tank?) but what about the electrics? To what extent would the 5.0 engine management plug and play to a D4 instrument pack for e.g. or any other systems the car has?
As you may have guessed I would not be safe attempting this work myself and would need to entrust it to someone, but am I just being ridiculous?
Speaking of which.... what about a supercharged transplant - seems the logical ultimate step.
I know I could just go and get a Range Rover but it isn't a Disco.
Would it be more sensible just to buy an LS crate motor and insert that? Or just keep the D3 and enjoy the money elsewhere...
I await the wisdom of those that know better...

Cheers! The going rate for a 5.0 lump seems to be about double a 4.2. I could slum it with a 4.2 if it was supercharged...
I was thinking I could get the Sport bits I need from a breaker, suspension arms and other consumable bits I'd do new anyway - but you may be right and a bent Sport to plunder might be wise and sell what's left of it when I'm done.

Could you not just buy a knackered D4 and swap everything onto your D3? Keep the 4.4 but have a full D4 conversion. Unless the 5.0 is the reason you want to swap of course..
My idea is purely from a cost point of view, I appreciate it won’t be a newer D4.

The CAN bus speeds are the same however all the signals are packed in different frames so they wouldn't talk to each other.
If you wanted something like that, why not buy an early L322 Charger? 1972 Range Rover Classic 2 door V8
2013 Land Rover Discovery 4 HSE - SCRAPPED
2016 Land Rover Discovery 4 Landmark
2022 Volvo XC40 T5 PHEV 282HP FWD 3 cylinder!

Well we'd like the practicality of the Disco which kind of ruled out anything RR - modding the D3 crossed my mind but it still won't be 'charged and the appeal of a Q Disco is strong.
I just thought it might be a more interesting way to get into a D4 than buying a diesel and hoping it doesn't grenade itself.
I don't have much sense, and I've even less money, so this may have to stay as one of "those" ideas.
Stuff like the canbus speeds is where my limited knowledge and understanding just gives up. Nuts and bolts I get - the rest, not so much.
And Disco_Mikey if you know where I can buy one, I'm on my way! South Africa could be a nice trip I guess... 8)

Have you looked into the legal requirements of a private import? If they are not too bad, you should consider importing one from Japan.
Most of the used cars on the road down here in NZ come from Japan. That includes just about all of my V8 Discos, including the current 5.0. A few also come from Singapore.
For various tax reasons relating to the age of vehicles, these two countries are a fantastic source of very reasonably priced used cars. Most have done very few kms as well - my one, when imported at the start of 2017 had only 28,000 kms. Basically brand new.
Transportation would be another thing to check, but they have car carriers taking new vehicles for. Japan to the UK, so I’m sure that won’t be an issue.
Google will help you find some Japanese car auction sites, or even better some English speaking agents who will sort out purchase and shipping.
I think this would be a much easier route for you - as long as UK laws aren’t to bad. Our NZ laws make it easy, whereas I believe the Australian laws make it much harder - worth checking out. King of the typo.
MY11 D4 5.0 V8, Bournville, lots of goodies!
Now departed: '85 RR Vogue, '94 D1, '95 D1, '70 SIIA, '97 D1, '04 D2a. All V8, except for the SIIA - but that drank as much petrol anyway!

Bowler would be my choice for expert support on this...
Won’t be cheap, but it would be mighty nice - unless you can find a RoW V8 spec factory vehicle... D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!

There is a LHD 5.0L D4 on sale on the bay on UK Plates. I guess long gone are the days when you could easily swap a LHD over to become a RHD.

I like the idea of fitting a V8 in my Disco. 8) I have done a few V8 transplants in the past, but nothing with the electronics on modern cars. Mantec sump guard.
Prospeed tree slider/steps.
Flack duel battery system.
18"Compomotive/AT3 tyres
Brembo 4pot front brakes
