Fascinating! What else are you getting done?
It's always interesting to see underneath the shell and see your car for what it really is... an engineering marvel!

Mine nearly lasted 5 years until the next body off...
The culprit was a small component irritatingly made of a plastic that literally blew apart with a 3 tonne caravan behind. Result: total engine failure as it still had to get to the top of the hill!
Rather than dispose of the lot I handed the job over to a LR enthusiast (mechanic he managed to source a 2016 version of the 2.7 TDV6 from a Ford Territory - Ford Australia bought the last of the 2.7s to put in a very practical body).
Whilst body was off the opportunity was taken to replace the EPB module (at great expense I must add) and some suspension repairs (I'll comment separately on the LCA's polybushes).
Now I want everyone to rush out and check the top water outlet and search for any weeping as the two parts will spontaneously explode due to age (LR recommends changing them at timing belt replacement). The part is relatively cheap (when compared to the cost of a replacement engine).
So that is the third engine in the car (220 000 km). The first failed at 142 000 km due to bearing failure (bloody crush fit bearings) in May 2013. Most of the oil changes were done at half the recommended interval as I tow a 3 tonne offroad caravan.
The second failure was the aforesaid water outlet that wasn't replaced when the short motor was installed (but a new turbo was due to how much bearing material had been pumped around the block).
This engine became unserviceable in February 2019 and was replaced with a low mileage Ford Territory TDV6.
We'll see what the next few years bring. Otherwise I still have the original permagrin that the D3/D4 range brings...LeighW

Change top water outlet with timing belt replacement

Sorry to hear of your problems; I hope the new engine lasts for a lifetime.
Interesting to read that LR recommends changing the top water outlet at timing belt replacement.
Could help me please with the appropriate part number, and the source of the recommendation, if possible?

Thanks NJSS, as to the 'official' LR comment I can't recall. You might appreciate that I have spoken to quite a number of professionals since my latest engine catastrophe and I can only recall that either "7 years, or when the timing belt is changed" was the comment. It may have been an LRA service manager not far from where the engine failed but I can't be sure.
The part number is LR073372
or can be viewed as the part marked in the link below 8952.
The actual part could be 'saved' from catastrophic failure by a pair of stainless steel Jubilee type clips/bands judiciously applied to stop the two halves from separating. I believe this could be done in-situ but if you are going to that much trouble the relatively small extra expense of replacing a suspect part would be advisable.
I certainly hope there is more durability in this engine than the last two...
As you would understand, I should have replaced the water outlet back in 2013 but there had been no suggestion that it should have been by the team that did the first engine replacement. It was almost 14 years old when it failed, so not a bad effort on it's part.

Is this a common fault/failure?
South Africa has had its fair share as well. I did read that some had been replaced as early as 2009 by cautious owners but their service interval was fairly high/long from when the model was introduced. Don't know if that had any bearing ('scuse the pun) on the longevity of the engine.LeighW

206k miles
115k on the original engine (failed due to incorrectly fitted oil filter)
I done 91k miles with the replacement engine, in addition to the 49k covered when purchased (which is now running in an RRS, as above )My D3 Build Thread

Worse than a blown engine:-
On the afternoon of 22 May 2013, a British Army soldier, Fusilier Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was attacked and killed by cowardly scum near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, southeast London.
Always remembered!
Here at Woolwich and they still haven't put up a proper memorial!LR Discovery 4 XS pulling an Airstream 532 Caravan also own (since new) a 1996 MGF
