AA Breakdown Parts & garage cover

I'm just in the process of switching my breakdown cover to the AA, and wanted some feedback on whether the parts and garage cover is worth it with a Disco.

Annually it adds £80.17 for to my breakdown cover costs for "Help with parts and garage bills after a breakdown. Covers up to 5 claims a year, each up to £500 with a £35 excess. Excludes pre-existing faults."

I've only had my Disco for a month, and it had a full service history with all the major jobs done, so I'm hoping its in pretty good shape.

Are people finding their costs are coming after a breakdown, or as a result of wear & tear over time or identified during servicing/MOT checks. I would imagine the later, and that this garage & parts cover wouldn't pick up much in the way of running costs.

Any thoughts?

Done quite a bit of work under this policy. Covered everything I've claimed for so far, and takes the sting out of a few bills Thumbs Up

I used to have it when I used mine for towing
Claimed on it a few times and never had a problem
As Disco Mikey says it does take the sting out of a repair

I got the Restricted Performance on my D4 and got a lift back on the big yellow taxi earlier this year

I had literally 2 days before just renewed my AA cover as the existing was due to expire about 3 days later - without renewing the Breakdown Repair.

Hasty phone call to AA to amend renewal to include it (no issues there as I was still covered anyway but was worried that I wouldn't be by time repair was completed), they paid out the £500 to replace a Turbo Shut Off Valve, no hassle, I paid garage directly, garage gave me the claims reference, I got paid within a couple of days (apparently pay members quicker than the garage)

So - IMO, I'd take it out - I will again when I renew in March Thumbs Up

Check RAC as well - I'm not sure but I seem to remember when I was looking that they cover up to £750. But I could be mistaken.

I've got this level of cover and not actually had to use it. Very good to know people have claimed with no problems.

I see the RAC version only covers certain parts, anyone know what is and isn't likely to be included?

"Are you dependent on your car?
Though we are proud of our record of fixing 4 out of 5 vehicles by the roadside, we also provide further services if we are unable to fix your vehicle. Compared to our standard level of cover, our Garage Parts and Labour package is designed for drivers who depend heavily on their vehicle, but may not have the finances to fit it straight away. This optional extra will cover the cost of certain parts and labour up to £750 per claim through the RAC-approved garage network to help get you back on the road again. It should be remembered that this option is only available with our Recovery cover package."

RAC paid for a full set of ARC pipes to the front of mine when the front flexi burst, no excess and 750 limit for 5 claims, only downside is it has to be recovered to RAC approved garage where as AA is any VAT reg garage
Had mine recovered to RAC approved garage but they weren't happy to work on it saying it was a specialised Vehice, RAC agreed to recover from their approved garage to my Indy and repair carried out no problems

Nearest RAC approved garage who are also a Landrover specialist to me are Vanstones in Launceston - just happens to be where the previous owner had my disco serviced. Not particular close - about 40 minutes drive, but I could live with that. Looks like RAC cover it is for me then. Thanks folks

I have had this cover for about 4 years now on 3-4 different cars and Have never had issues with placing the claim and getting approved, definitely recommended as 500 quid will cover pretty much all the little to mid size issues like altermator, starter etc. They even replaced the battery on my Jeep Wrangler once as they found it faulty!!
The only thing that sucks though but yet i can kind of understand is you HAVE to breakdown and AA has to attend the vehicle before claim can be made.

Just to throw in a bit of balance Whistle
I did have a failed claim with this policy.

It was on a RR P38, the famous BECM went pair shaped causing the electrics to throw a wobbly, amongst other things my headlights packed up.

Patrolman confirmed diagnostics and doing what I thought was helpful drove the car to my local Indy to be sorted. Big mistake as apparently by doing this it showed the car was not faulty. The claim 'MAY' have been settled if I had waited for a recovery truck!!

I pointed out that the car was pretty useless in the middle of the night without any lights, but this didn't seem to matter Exclamation

Bit annoying as the claim came to exactly £500.
