Adblue top up

Had the DEF low message displayed at start-up for about two weeks which then changed to Fill DEF Tank, accompanied by the yellow warning triangle permanently illuminated for a further week or so. The DEF range was showing 600 miles or so by this point so I thought I ought to put some in.

I added 1.5 litres which was all I could get my hands on at the time, I see from other posts that the system doesn't seem to recognise top ups very quickly.

Having done about 400 miles spread over the whole week since topping up the yellow triangle and warning message are still there. Does it really take a week for the system to reset? How big is the Adblue tank, is it that I haven't put enough in for it to register as being topped up?

Still got over six weeks until my first service, don't really want to make an unscheduled service visit unless I really need to. Should I just put some more in to see if it makes any difference?

I may be mistaken but IIRC JLR said when announced AdBlue for the Disco they said that franchised dealers would refill without charge.

Is this ad infinitum or is there some time limit?

I was told the same, but only during warranty / service contract. Salesman said "if it needs filling just pop it in to LR dealer and they'll do it". (mind you - he lied about other stuff too!)

The cheapest I have seen AdBlue in reasonable quantities is c. £1 per litre:-

http://unipartautostore.com/unipart-adblue...GwodhHYHlQ

That's a fair price for a solution of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionised water.

I do recognoise the need for qaulity in view of the cost of replacing an AdBlue pump, but surely someone is "taking the p..s" - sorry taking the urea. ?

Dealers may well fill them for free but too much hassle when you can pick up a bottle from pretty much any garage forecourt.

Apparently the Ad-blu tank is 17 litres... and 3.78 litres is the minimum amount required to restart the engine if you ever run out... so maybe 1.5 litres isn't enough to register as filled when you're very low?

Be wary of the cheap adblue as it was the source of many exhaust faults on the trucks.

Thanks, that's really helpful. I had no idea that the tank would be anywhere near that capacity, don't know why, hadn't really thought about it I'd just assumed it was about 5lt or so as even LRs own video shows a DS being filled up from a 1.5lt screw on bottle, very similar to the one I purchased.

When i had the yellow warning i tried a 1.5l top up and it didn't register. Its a 17L tank so i put 10L in and it finally registered after 4 miles drive and a restart. I wouldn't bother making a trip to the dealers grab 10L from "somewhere" and just pour it in it will fit Thumbs Up

Yep I think we need to make sure its Adblue, the dealer will sell it in JLR friendly bottles with the splash guard which will be handier. The forecourt bottles have a flexi nozzle that just gluged it in so I needed to be a bit more careful. I looked for the Adblue logo rather than just generic DEF fluid and presumed it would be the same spec ISO but didnt bother checking exactly I presumed Adblue is Adblue Embarassed
