Advice on broken D4 - scrap/dismantle value?

Hi,

Similar to a previous post I found in relation to a D3.. my beloved 59-plate D4 (2010 MY, HSE) has suffered some kind of catastrophic engine failure and it looks as though it will cost more to repair than the vehicle is worth Big Cry Big Cry

Like many on here, I'd been maintaining it well with a view to keeping it long term.. it recently had its side steps replaced; I only just fitted a new inlet manifold, various other bits have been replaced as/when they became worn, etc... but of course without an engine I guess the car isn't worth very much, I can't exactly drive it home and think about what to do next, either.

I've never been in this situation before and don't really know what best to do.. The garage is going to have a think about whether they may want to make me an offer and perhaps buy the car from me - but are there any scrap / dismantling companies that anyone can recommend, who might buy an otherwise well-maintained D4 that happens to have an engine that's currently in pieces..?

How would I go about valuing the vehicle? I guess there is a cost associated with transport, since it can't drive itself - but hopefully the rest of the vehicle must be worth something.

I am looking at buying a new (to me) D4 from Auto Trader or similar at the moment.. having had a D3/D4 for the last 10 years I still want to stick with one.. but want to try and minimise my losses from mine before I make any decisions.

(The car is in Congleton, Cheshire if that makes a difference)

Thanks guys! Rolling Eyes

I feel for you, it’s a crap place to be and know how it feels. ISTR Woody32 was looking for dead engine cars to buy, but may be wrong.

If you’re buying another, why not just stick a LR recon engine in it and crack on.

Not sure I would just scrap it and buy another? Surely a cheaper option as well?

Thanks guys Crying or Very sad

133k pretty much trouble-free miles (ok, recently the inlet manifold needed replacing but at least the car still drove!)

In the end I was coasting downhill having just taken a slip road off a raised part of road in Manchester. I heard what sounded a little like one of those kids toys that goes in the spokes of a bicycle, I thought it was coming from outside the car but I looked down and the engine wasn't running any longer. Came to a halt at the roundabout at the bottom, and that was that.. Crying or Very sad Car just clicked when I tried to re-start it; I thought at first it might be something simple - but evidently not.

Was eventually recovered (after 3hrs) by Egertons, who took it to independent dealer for me (took them 4 days to do that!). Dealer reckons would cost approx £10k to fix (metal fragments might have reached turbos, too) .. trade-in value was just less than that Big Cry

I was about to trade it in for a newer (2016MY) D4, as well.. I just hadn't quite settled on the one I wanted, when this happened Sad

Unfortunately I'm not that good with a spanner (small stuff, yes no problem - but replacing engines, no way) so have to rely on others to advise.. currently all I have is the dealer's advice (which I have no reason to disbelieve - they are a reputable local independent) and going by that, it isn't worth spending more than the car is worth, when I was looking to trade it in anyway for less than I'd be shelling out on a repair Sad

How long had you been running it with restricted performance mode due to the cracked manifold/s?

The crankshaft snapped on my 2010D4 a couple of years ago, left me in a similar situation to you, car was worth £20k in good condition and the repair bill was around £13k.

I looked into various options for a while, but in the end had the car trailered to my nearest LR dealership, they looked into whether LR could help with the repair cost but they pretty much refused, so I part-exed the broken 2010 for a 2014 D4 with LR warranty, they gave me a pretty fair price for the broken one which I assume they put a new engine in and sold on.

You could probably get a reconditioned engine to fit your D4.
I had the same thing happen on my wife's XC90 2010 model, took a gamble and bought a replacement engine and had it fitted. £2300 all in, and now it runs smooth again.
pointless scrapping the vehicle
Thumbs Up

Thanks guys, I appreciate the pointers!

stonkintime - the inlet manifold went slowly, I think .. it only flagged up as 'restricted mode' intermittently at first, but then after a long journey where it came up early on I took it to an independent who diagnosed and fixed it. Once the car figured out there was a problem and went into restricted mode, yes performance was poor but at least no smoke came out of the back then, and it ran clean!

woody32 - thanks for the advice, I'm waiting for the garage to call me back and see if they are interested .. but if not, do you know anyone who would be - would you be or is it too far away??

Life - live it - I'd love to do the same, but honestly wouldn't know where to start. The local independent is reputable and have quoted me £10k, I don't know anywhere else that would definitely be able to fix it cheaper Sad At this point I'm thinking to cut my losses and at least hopefully sell it for parts, rather than risk getting the engine replaced elsewhere and then finding out more still needs doing .. Sad Unless anyone can recommend anywhere I could phone / speak to???

I have no idea if these parts are any good, but Turner Engineering seem to be offering some 3.0l engine parts.

Can an engine be rebuilt with these? They have cranks for sale??

I know someone who claimed on his car insurance who paid for the engine...wasn’t that many years ago and not a disco, a bmw. I’ve often wondered why people don’t try that, it’s not wear and tear

The feedback on the ebay site has nothing to do with engines.
