I suspect what is meant is that if the new engine number is not on the V5 it may show up as a "funny" when someone looks at the car. Conversely when doing a history check an engine number change would probably show up on it and would require explanation. Thats apart from the fact that if you haven't updated the engine number on the v5 thats a bit naughty as you need to provide receipts etc to prove it
Correct, if the new engine number is not registered on the V5 then alarm bells will ring and lead to further questions.
You need to remember this might be a large purchase for the potential buyer so they will be on 'high alert'.
Not wishing to lose their hard earned pennies they will check everything is as should be regarding the paperwork!

Thanks all for your comments.
Going to look at XC90 tomorrow Moo.
Budget wise whether it is a Q7 or XC 90, it is the 07-10 plates.
Rexton might be an option. Just found out that there is a dealer 10 miles away. Will look to see what they have. MY07 Freelander2 SE Santorini Black - Gone

Out of interest have you tried a later model seats?
Might be cheaper just swapping for later model HSE Seats. The seats in my 09 HSE seats are no where near as comfortable as the 13 HSE I have - my wife hates driving in the 09 but has no issues in the later HSE Seats.
Could be a lot cheaper changing the front seats than switching cars Must stop buying shiny toys....

So we have decided to sell the D4. Wife has found it uncomfortable in the passenger seat. Tried all different cushions, supports etc. Got to the point she doesn’t want to go to far in it now.

Change wife....................
I'm truly gutted someone beat me to it BUT ... I'm surprised you and SWMBO are finding the seats uncomfortable. .

I tested a Q7 before buying my Disco......
The Q7 air suspension failed on the test drive and the rear most seats were much smaller (too small) for my 12 year old son......

Tried an XC90 (2014 model) before buying the new Disco . Both my wife and I had a headache after driving it. It was constantly changing gear, hunting up and down for the right one when on faster roads.
We both found the 2015 D4 so comfortable to drive in comparison. Gary

The 2015 onwards XC is chalk and cheese with the old XC90 and 8 speed D4. Mine is super smooth, quiet and the seats are absolutely superb. It’s leagues ahead in comfortable and handling to a D4, which is now very dated, although still very capable.
I liked my D3 and D4 but the world moves on and I have no loyalty to any brand, just what meets my need.

Regarding the latest XC90, that may well be. I was providing an opinion on the model the OP has stated he will be looking at (07-10 plates). Gary
