I would say that your compressor is probably OK.
I would not say that my compressor runs everytime I change height, however when it does start up, it will certainly run for 3 or 4 minutes - at least it seems like that anyway.
If you said that your compressor was running for 10 minutes at a time without resting, I would say that is not normal as the compressor tends to heat up so it has to stop and rest, (cool off), and then after a few minutes, it may start up again if air pressure is still needed.
As to how long it will run before it overheats, I think it depends on the outside air temperature. Here these days, the OAT is about -20C so overheating has not been a real concern. The fact that the compressor even starts is more of a miracle and that the air system does not freeze up - well maybe that is because the air is so dry but ...
Anyway, if your 3 tends to rise evenly, (all corners and fairly quickly), then all is probably well as if there is an air shortage or low pressure, you will tend to get the camel effect and slow raising. 2005 LR3 HSE 4.4L AJ-V8 petrol; Traxide Dual Battery; PIAA 2500K Yellow Ion H11 Fog Light bulbs; CounterAct LT-2 Capacitive Corrosion control; LLumar AIR80 Blue clear Infra Red blocking side window film; Liftgate manual release; Schrader Valve "air in" mod to OEM air suspension reservoir tank; Akebono ceramic pads; OEM solid vented discs; LR4 design hitch receiver; Wiggs D4 MOST bluetooth module; Clock on the Dash; 3 Flash signal light mod; Backup Camera; 2015/16 Nav Data update.

Jeep Air System uses Nitrogen? |
|
If you are having any second thoughts re four corner air suspension, well an alterative, (not), is now available on the new Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Quadra Lift option.
The link gives a pretty good description of what Jeep has designed re their new 4 corner air spring Quadra Lift system on the 2011 Grand Cherokee.
To my mind, the system on the 3, (and 4), while far from perfect, still looks better. As such, I have posted the below link as I think it may be of interest to those of us with our 4 corner air sprung 3's.
If I understand the Jeep system correctly, it uses nitrogen at about 220 psig, (not air), stored in an "air" tank, but once the nitrogen is gone, you stop by your friendly Fiat dealer and reload. Apparently reloading requires Jeep's version of the T4.
The system does have a compressor, but the purpose is to push nitrogen, (not air), back and forth between the air springs and the tank - a closed system they call it, and a weekly refill is not supposed to be required.
In operation, it looks a bit like that on the older Range Rovers, (the camel system), where the rear rises first and then the front. Apparently the compressor is only big enough to handle two springs at a time.
The front air springs are a bit like the 3 with the shock in the middle, but the rear is again like the older Rovers, just an air bladder. There is no cross linking between the left and right sides - odd really, and apparently lacking that makes the system a distant second relative to Land Rover in real road driving.
How reliable this all works is going to be interesting to watch over time. Chasing after a Land Rover has it perils; Toyota does not even try, so I give Jeep full marks for courage, and I must say, the interior is a good imitation of the 4.
