Air con usage.

So we know that not using the air con for longish periods like winter, can lead to problems.
In our modern vehicles with climate control etc, does winter use of climate control mean that the air con is not being used. Sounds like a really silly question, but I was wondering......

It runs in the winter too to dry the air as I understand it. It's not just for cooling.

Leave it on all the time, the only time it will switch itself off is if the outside temp is to cold.
A/c dries the air just like a dehumidifier.

Yes just leave it on, it works all year round.

Our vehicles are designed for it to work all the time, if you switch it off you wont get anymore power or mpg.
The old systems that used to use R12 gas could rob 5-10bhp from your engine and make a big difference to your mpg, switching it off made a noticable difference to both.

I thought on the discovery even when the a/c is turned off it still operates on a low setting?

I believe that is the case as the compressor is variable displacement (which is why you cant really notice its on unlike the old systems which were simple on/off) and even when a/c and climate off its still idling at something like 1 percent.
