Is it definitely fecked or just dirty?
My Volvo had such a failure but it turned out to be dirt getting past the filter and sticking to the sensor element, protecting it from airflow and hence causing an incorrect reading. I cleaned it with a cotton bud/q-tip in isopropyl and it fixed it.
The element is usually ceramic nowadays and hellishly fragile; anything more than the tickle of a whisp of cotton wool can break it, so if you're going this route take your time and do it slowly.
I take it you've checked for the obvious things like corrosion at the multi-plugs? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Thanks for that Steve
Andrew ,
TBH I was only 10 minutes away ( under normal driving) from my local when it threw an engine system fault with loss of power ec etc.Tried ignition to see if it would clear , tried a hard reset but the fault was persistent.
So I just drove it straight to the dealers , grabbed a courtesy car and legged it.Phonecall later said I needed a new meter. So really I can't say it it involved what you describe above but out of curiosity I'l ask for the original meter so I can have a look at it. Thanks

i had a Mass Air Flow fault code once (forget the exact one) followed a week later by an EGR failure & replacement. sensor was OK. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Recently had the "Engine System Fault" message (May) - dealer diagnosed faulty meter and replaced it.
Fault code I had - P2199-22
Thread - http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic34888.html
It would appear when slowing down after a high-speed (eg motorway) run. No power loss, though. Replacement improved the frequency of the message coming up but it only went away after I thoroughly cleaned out all the mud from the radiator, intercooler and from all the underbody trays.
Or so I thought - message came back twice on the motorway coming back from Spain this weekend... The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

mmmm, I have 2199 showing on the BAS box, and recently mpg is down from 25/6mpg to 21/22mpg and it s a bit smokier than I remember when booted hard. No warning lights coming up. I have cleared bucket loads of sand from intercooler, rad and engine bay since hogmoor, guess I will wait and see...

typical
Sensor here , 126 euro + VAT
Labour , testbook , roadtest & VAT brought it up to above 400 euro IIRC.Had I known then and wasn't in a rush I'd have snailed it back home and fitted the thing myself.
