Alarm / remote heater fit info

Hi All,

This may be old info to you guys but I thought I would post in case anyone is interested.

Yesterday I got round to fitting my webasto timer and GSM remote set-up. I have built it into a waterproof box with a bit of extra space as I may want to add some circuits to do other things at a later date.

I wanted to mount the box under the bonnet and decided to mount it next to the second battery between the ABS pump and the alarm sounder. When I removed the second battery to get access I realised there wasn't enough room for my box so I removed the alarm sounder as I had previously disconnected it for the 'horns' mod anyway.

I finished the job off and was back in the workshop putting the tools away and decided to have a look at the (Volvo) alarm sounder unit. I slackened off the 3 nylock bolts and removed one half of the 'armour plating / bracket' that surrounds the plastic sounder. This part has small holes in it to let the sound out. Once removed you can see the horn shaped plastic sounder 'speaker'

Out of curiosity I plugged the sounder back in to the car and set the alarm off. The sound was MUCH louder. Not as loud as the horns but much better than with the metal cover on.

So if you want more sound from your alarm but don't want to loose the battery backup / tilt detection in the sounder unit just remove the front half of the metal cover!

Hi TFC,

Oh well, if someone wants to keep the battery backup then.
(Although why you would want to keep that I don't know) Laughing

I know this is an old post, but I have been reading about improving the alarm sound volume by disconnecting the Volvo box. I am left with a few of queries.
1) The box that contains the Volvo unit does not have a second battery in it - presumably some models do? Since I don't does that mean that there is no "battery backup sounder"?
2) Mine's a UK model, so doesn't have a tilt sensor, right?
3) Does that mean that the only thing the Volvo box does is make the alarm noise, and I can safely disconnect it without the loss of any other features?

Thanks for any info.

Interesting. However not sure you are correct about no battery though on the later models. No problem on my previous '05 model but.....When I went to do the mod on my '09 model as soon as I pulled the plug on the Volvo thing (that's no mean feat either) it squealed and squealed - definitely a battery in there!! Only solution was to reconnect it and put up with the pathetic sound - so maybe I will try taking the cover off as mentioned above.

Yes there was a battery in my 08.5 too. I just dismantled the Volvo thing and disconnected it.
