I did tow many things, including a caravan with the removable tow bar, but did change it to a TowTrust TL1 because I wanted to leave it in place all the time.

The trouble with the horror stories is a that all too often they don't include all the information or back story

The recent one showing the horse box with the hitch attached and no car does include the fact that the car was new to the driver who didn't even realise the hitch came out. The state of the hitch itself would indicate that there was more of a history to it than was known.

In the caravan fraternity we are all warned to unreel the hookup lead frequently accompanied with a photograph of an orange cable reel with a totally burnt out cable. A valid warning in itself but the reel always pictured was actually being used by a potter in America (possibly even at 110v a.k.a. 2 x Amps) to power a electric kiln and potters wheel etc. in their workshop

I’ve always used a detachable tow bar on the three D3/4’s we’ve had, towing caravans up to 1900kg (current one). Always removed when not I use and kept both the tow bar and receiver as clean as possible. Never had an issue. And all the caravans have had Al-Ko hitch/stabilisers.
