Alloy Wheel Corrosion
Guys,
Apologies if this has been covered before, but I've searched to no avail.
I've got the 19" HSE rims and have 2 separate problems;
1 wheel has the coating flaking off the wheel. This was the spare and has not really been out of it's carrier much.
Another has corrosion inside the rim (I'm told by the local tyre fitters). This is causing a slow leak of air from the tyre at the seal. They checked the tyre & valve, but the leaks coming from the seal at the bead. He reckons it's corrosion that's stopping a good seal.
Anyone come across these issues before and any luck with a warranty claim on them?

Normally this happens cos of the lead weights clipped onto the rim edge. I recommmend either stick on weights, or heard alot about Dynobeads, they are synthetic tiny beads that are loose in the tyre thus naturally balancing.
Sadly if you already have corrosion, sanding and powder coating is the easiest option, approx £45 - £55 a wheel.
They will be as good as new,

Flaking on the spare might be because of pitting from deflections and then salting on the roads. Slow air leaks on the bead seal could be because of off-roading contamination ie sand, mud, dirt etc.....not heard of it due to corrrosion. Are your roads heavily salted in winter??

Yep, it can - it still oxidizes - alloy equivalent of rust
Salt can do it - as can overly aggressive wheel cleaning solutions (some are very heavily alkali)
If you catch a rim on the curb, the process usually gets a kick start right there as you've broken the seal of the painted finish.
Keep wheels clean and seal with a paint sealant when new - that helps prolong their life - and stay away from curbs! 08 LR3 SE V8 - 02 D2 SE7 V8

I am surprised the guy's in Oz have any wheels left with the cleaners they have. the Turtle Wax Platinum has a ph of 13.5 and the Eagle one of 12.7, That will destroy your skin as well as the aluminium. I would not get any of that stuff on my hands.
