AMK Compressor problem

Hi people

Not the merry Christmas I expected, my 55 plate Disco was giving the height only warning, bing bong this last few days, went out this morning and the suspension was on the stops, I had a new relay so fitted same, no difference, I then removed the bottom cover, to see the three bolts (AMK) with rubbers and springs collapsed, asked the good half to start the engine, compressor runs for about 10 seconds then cuts out, no signs of air leak, the compressor was changed to the AMK about 18-20 months ago, I am presuming the compressor is dead, question is, can they be repaired, if not where to get one at not silly money. Sad

Part number on the unit is: BH32 19G525 DC

Many thanks in advance.

The compressor will last that long if it hasn't had the RLM firmware updated to the AMK firmware...

If it's only running for 10 seconds, the car is not seeing a pressure increase, so you have:

An air leak
A worn compressor
Exhaust valve stuck open
Faulty pressure sensor

Thanks Mikey

The garage who fitted the compressor charged me for a soft wear update as part of the invoice, but since posting, my better half says the compressor may have been possibly running all the time,
I presume a leak, which may have worn out the compressor and explain the compressor mounting springs being collapsed ? how would you check for a exhaust valve fault, can I check for pressure by fitting a gauge to the compressor, if so where ? again many thanks.

Ideally, you need it plugged into the diagnostics, and watch the live readings to see what is going on Thumbs Up

Hi Mikey

Had a good look at all the connections and pipes today, apart from one that was slightly chaffed (now repaired) I can find no leaks, when I disconnect the 10mm from the compressor (push on one) and get someone to run the engine, compressor still only runs 10 sec or so, I can hold my thumb over the outlet with little air coming out, I thought the pressure would be much more in the region of 12-15 bar, would you have a Compressor ? I only live 35 miles from you and would be happy to come to Dundee tomorrow as I need to get the dam thing mobile, thanks.

I have a compressor in stock, as well as pipe fitting etc. If you can make it to me for around 11, I'll take a look for you Thumbs Up

All fixed, compressor after all, many thanks to Mikey, it had been upgraded but Mikey redid it again, also found I had a MAF failure, odd thing though, Mikey had replaced another AMK compressor recently and the date code and batch were the same as mine (Feb 2013) anyone else had a failed compressor of the same date code ? Might be a faulty batch, again thanks to Mikey and the forum.

When I fitted my AMK the instructions mentioned an AMK which was also being superseded. One of the pipe connections was different. It was a bayonet fitting. Is you're compressor one of this type of AMK?

Hi Doz

My compressor had one push fit and two pipes with compression fittings, none that I would say were a bayonet fitting ( I presume you mean push and turn ), I believe there have been two versions of the AMK and as far as I know mine was the second version, although if I am wrong someone with more knowledge on here will let us know, one of the benefits of the forum.

Hi Dave,

I know it's an old post, but nevertheless have AMK unit from the same batch. A bit gutted. Would expect AMK, being more pricier option over Hitachi, to last decent time, not 5y.

Got 61plate D4 with suspension faults. Took it to garage, removed compressor which was surprisingly clean. Connected unit to 12v supply and measured pressure on outlet about 2-5bar. When connected to car it runs for around 20 sec and shuts down by giving fault. I understand pressure should be around 17bar.

Garage opened dryer - all looks ok. Valve cap removed and resealed. Still no change on pressure.

Other possibilities?:
-faulty piston seal
-faulty exhaust valve
-faulty relay
-software, however I'd imagine when 2013 AMK was fitted on 61plate software would have been updated. Tried calling LR dealers, systems were down, may try later.

Is it worth trying to repair it? still damn just 5y
