I looked into the snapped crank issue before upgrading the wifes D2 to D3 and ended up with a D3 hse fully loaded and a nice drive, iv spent 700ish on a full engine service including a new oil pump and suspension pump.
Its a risk im happy to take its on 114k one owner from new full service history and im handy with a spanner if it goes pop il get a jag and swop the engine....if i have to i hope i dont.

Hi looking at your YouTube video the engine is miss firing and making a chuffing noise,are you sure it’s not a injector seal. If the crank goes it doesn’t normally miss. Is there any black smoke out the exhaust?

There's no black smoke Rob. Those video's aren't actually my car, they are Del's (DSL) from his thread back in 2015. However, mine was making exactly the same noises.

I don't think they ignored it or decided that it was not an issue. It just became an ideal opportunity to sell a £4k replacement engine for over £12k. Nice earner.

With depreciation taking hold and many choosing to scrap rather than buy a new engine JLR sensed a new issue and lowered the £4k engine to £6k+ or so retail. Still a nice earner.

Sure a few customers get raped but you have to replace falling sales targets with something and their marketing folk think that brand loyalty is just not supported by the numbers. For markets where litigation has more teeth they will admit the issue, but in the UK they say whatever they like.

As the car is now off the road and waiting for a new engine to be fitted by Oval Autos, I thought I'd have a look at the filter in case I had accidentally crushed it when I did the last oil and filter change.

Thankfully, the filter was fine which makes me feel slightly better that this was not my fault.

Here you can see the the tiny fragments of metal in the oil that drained from the filter and also some stuck at the top of the filter cap...
