Another wet drivers footwell

I need some help with a flooded drivers footwell, I cleaned the car at the weekend and it was all dry - so this fault seems to have come aggressively over night! I parked up last night as normal facing slightly down hill, then didn't use the D4 until this afternoon, opened the drivers door and got this view.... We did have some snow covering the car that had mostly melted by the time I went to use the car.

The rubber mat was dry, but I could see lots of water underneath it, I attempted to dry the carpet with a towel, but the water just kept coming - so I removed the side trims

Found the water was very deep and submersing the cables, so I put more towels under the carpet in an attempt to dry it out.

Now to try and work out where the water is coming from - the roof is dry, the head lining is dry, the a & b pillars are dry, the dash was dry, the external a pillars looked OK and flush. The only thing I noticed was a gap in the lower windscreen scuttle about the with of a credit card - the card slotted in without any pressure.

Yes it has a sunroof, and the alpine roof or whatever they call it..

Just seen something about the star drain in the air intake getting full of crap - ill try that.

I thought the sunroof drains = wet head lining?

When blocked, the sunroof drains overflow and the water tracks down the outside of the drain tube, the headlining often doesn't get wet. Big Cry

The drivers side ( providing it is the outlet that's blocked ) is usually easier to unblock than the near side on a D3, on a D4, yours should be easy.
Remove the wing vent, feel inside for the outlet and podge a hole in it. If the water comes roaring out you've found your problem. Thumbs Up

I put an open ended hose pipe in the sunroof drain and plenty flooded out under the car.

External A-pillar trim the bit that goes down either side of the windscreen, Iirc the fitting kit says some of the fixing holes need to be blanked off with tape?

Just really confused as nothing had changed with them, the only thing that’s happened is I did an oil change this weekend. I’ve had the D4 about 5 months and always been dry, but today absolutely flooded. The towels I used to soak up under the carpet have flooded the garage as so much water has dropped out.

First stick some small tubing into the wire loom area at the deepest part and siphon the water out using gravity, you'll be amazed at how much will come out. Towels on the carpet are useless until you have done this.

Then check behind the air pillar trim in the footwell, the tubing may have come away from the bodywork as it uses a gromit/plug to hold it in place.

Also check the headlining above the centre light. it can track down from there from the front tray of the sunroof without showing on the visible side.

Then check the drain holes out into the wheel arch.

Thumbs Up

I have lifted what I can of the carpet and will see if it’s dry tomorrow morning as we have plenty of rain currently. The only change I have done is tape over the window scuttle.

I now think it’s been damp for a while as the bottom footrest bolt has rusted, and as soon as I put a socket on it snapped.

I have checked the sunroof drain and it all looks ok, it’s not a star end but just a round fixing. I poured loads of water in and it drained out just as fast, did overwhelm them and had a little overflow into the cab Embarassed

The car has been parked up most of the day and I don’t seem to have any more water entering the car, so it must have been my scuttle panel that I have taped up.

These papers have been in most of the morning and are all dry. We have had rain and snow most of the day.

Dry

Well its now been a 4 days since i taped over the scuttle, and so far that car has stayed dry - and we have had plenty of rain and snow. I drove around most of the weekend with the carpets up and the heater diverted to the foot wells and its mostly dried out the insulation, its still slightly damp but thats it.

On Saturday I poured water into the sunroof drain and checked the end behind the air intake and it all looked clean and the water - Gutted as I overflowed them into the cab so I have a wet headlining now, just hope the water marks dry out.

I have all the carpets down again and I have been leaving paper towels under the carpet and checking every morning / evening and they are all still dry!

Will be ordering up a new lower windscreen scuttle.

I am no expert so might be getting this completely wrong...

...on my previous D4 I had a leak drivers side. Windscreen had been recently replaced so thought it must be to do with that. However, eventually the hole was found to be in a weld in the metal just behind the screen. (Is possible that the weld opened when the old screen was taken off). The reason I mention this - as far as I could tell the scuttle is not making the seal, the seal was formed by the "glue" between screen and body. If that is true, then the water getting behind the scuttle is not the problem, as there must then be a way into the car.

I also didnt think its required to be a water tight seal, but all I know is i found a gap, taped over it and now its stopped filling the car Question

I am going to order a replacement, as the current one is really badly discoloured anyway, and was on the list of things to swap then remove the old one and take a closer look, see if something is blocked or damaged. I didn't want to strip it all down without having the replacement in my hand.

If the scuttle finisher is not against the screen water can enter the pollen filter intake, its a bad design which you'll see when you remove the scuttle, this is however on the passenger side but water gets where it wants to after it's in....

So I'd check the pollen filter to see if it's damp (behind the lower glove box)

Then there is a thread somewhere that shows how to use a cut up plastic bottle to create a shield to stop it happening again

BTW I managed to remove my scuttle without removing the side trims, be careful as the side trims break easily
Also I used a small puller to remove the wipers from the shafts.
