I've seen mixed reports, some say only repair if they look like they need it, some say they should definitely be done?

Hard to say. I changed mine and the same on the D3. They are big bolts on the Transporter and about £20 for 4.

I believe the rear bolt for the shock is also a stretch bolt. However I didn't change this when I had to adjust a coilover.
