Approved Used Car Tax

Just about to pick up the discovery today and the dealer have said that i need to pay for the car tax, as they don't tax approved used cars. They then went on to blame the new government car tax system

I think this is a bit rich, especially given the drive away insurance...infact i think Im being taken for a ride!

They didnt mention this at any point other than the morning of the purchase and I have never had to tax a car ive bought, they made a big deal about drive away insurance too - what i think is they are trying to mitigate the deal they did by not paying anything more

I know a few of you will have bought approved used cars from a dealer - did you have to tax it?

yes, every time, new and used - tax isnt a dealer thing, its off to the treasury (via the DVLA).

The tax system changed, and now when you sell a car you claim the unused tax back (only in full months though) and then you tax the repalcement car (again in full months) so best time to change is last day of the month, then there's no tax overlap - otherwise its a nice little earner for the Treasury.

In your case, by changing today you can reclaim unused tax (if there was any) on your old motor from 1st March, but will need to tax new motor from 1st Feb, so there's the 1 month overlap - bad timing I'm afraid.

Thanks

I know about the tax changes, but ive never had to tax a car with my usual dealer.

The old car went last week (although its still sitting here waiting for collection!!), so that will be fine

Its more the dealer is asking for me to pay for the new car tax rather than them doing it - saying they cant tax a car?

I know how you feel, same experience when I bought our used D4 a couple of years ago and yes new system blamed but in truth is they're just keeping more margin, I've bought another used car since then and it came taxed by the dealer for 12 months

Mind you even had a BMW dealer try it on with a new car a few years ago, they capitulated in the end but perhaps not surprising they didn't retain our business

Ahh - OK, so its the actual action of taxing it, not the cost. In which case no, I'm pretty sure the dealer did it on both my D4's, one approved used and one new, and both were under the new tax system.

2011 D4 isn't £500 either. it's £520 Big Cry

they can't do it because the tax stays with the owner and not the car. they could obviously allow you £520 to do it but there are soooooo many things that dealers could do for you to and they won't.

I thought £305 was bad (it is)...but £500 is mad?!

Well it does have genuine LR warranty for a few months before it goes into the approved warranty...although its not come home with us as the seat broke and has stayed at the dealers!

I keep toying with rejecting the car but dont know

I think a 44 tonner is about 750 quid ish and they can get 10mpg, which kind of makes the D3/4 r/rs look very poor mpg wise.

Just a ploy to not pay for the tax. It really doesn't matter who actually applies for the tax and indeed possibly you want to do it for your new car anyway these days, but the cost of the tax, which is what we are really talking about can be borne by the dealer whoever taxes it. Or not. They can simply adjust the price of the vehicle by the amount of the tax surely!
