Audio Cutting out!

Hi all, i'm having a few probs with the radio and sat nav and hoping someone might be able to shed some light on it before taking it to the dealers again (out of warrenty)

A few weeks back the sat nav froze up, it just sat on the land rover screen and never moved (even after about 10mins), the touch screen didn't operate and neither did the 2 buttons below, also the stereo volume didn't work, i.e no sound at all and the volume marker on the display never came up when you turned the knob or used the steering controls, although the time indicator was ticking away and the track forward and reverse worked fine, also the same on radio etc, tried locking and waiting 2mins for sleep mode but with no results. This did go back to the dealers, they changed the amp but it made no difference so put the origional back in, they did however say it was something to do with a bad connection block at the rear of the car (which they have cleaned) and it's all working now.

Got in the car the other day, started the car and sat putting post code into the sat nav when the suspension compressor kicked in and the sat nav, radio all switched off and wouldn't switch on again, had to switch off and wait 2 mins (sleep mode) for it to come back on.

Have found now that when the stereo is on the sound drops out (disappeares) when the sub kicks in, as if there isn't enough power for the amp, this is at volume levels of 6-9 and the engine running, it happens more frequent with the volume up to say 20 or the engine is switched off, it seems to happen less frequently after a long run.

Thinking it maybe the battery on the way out as i'm having the occasional error messages on the HDC on startup, the battery is measuring 12V standing and 15v when running(ticking over).

Any ideas would be greatful before i take it to the dealers etc

Lee

Does it say "low power mode - shutting down " on either the radio or sat nav ..or does it just go off

It does say low power mode or low battery mode on the radio, but only with the volume turned upto 20+, this is with the engine running. It's never said shutting down.

If its saying that with the engine running then i would be inclined to get the battery / alternator checked.

The radio and sat nav are the first things to be shut down as they are "non essential items "

Many thanks wiggs, was having the same thoughts myself although when i put the battery on the charger it comes up fully charged within 5 mins, don't think it's the charger as it charges the caravan battery without any probs.

Will get the battery checked out tho.

Cheers Very Happy

Does the stereo go into "Low power mode" when the engine is off automatically?

Get them to check the gravity levels in the battery ..

Do you ever get any other faults on the LCD display on the dash when you start up ?

No just HDC fault, then special programs off for a second then all clear, programs and functions work ok too. This started with the cold weather.

I think so, but it just stops you wacking the stereo upto 20+ without the engine running, assumingly to stop you flatterning the battery etc.

You could try this yourself first ..as posted by Drivesafe Thumbs Up

Hi MrH, before you do anything, you need to see if the alternator is actually charging the battery.

After taking a 15 minute drive, leave the motor running and measure the voltage at the battery.

From a cold start, try not to drive much more than 15 minutes before you take your reading because the D3 will reduce voltage if it senses that the battery is near fully charged.

A better way to test and get an idea of how the charge voltage works on a D3, run a length of speaker cable from the cranking battery terminals, into the cab and connect your multi meter there so you can read as you drive.

The minimum voltage at the battery should be 13.8 and even high in cold temps.

Anything above this voltage will fully charge the battery ( depending on how long you drive for ).

If you get a voltage reading between 13.2 and 13.8 in that first 15 minutes, you will be putting some charge into the battery but it’s never going to fully charge, no matter how long you drive for.

That's the one Wink usually put it on if I know where I'm going especially after a couple of HDC warnings (that have gone again) Thumbs Up
