Auto box "clonk" on stopping |
|
In the last week or so I've found that the auto box doesn't seem to want to release as you come to a halt on the foot brake. Ordinarily you can bring the car to a gentle stop but intermittently I'm finding I have to apply increased pressure, as if the car is trying to drive on and is ignoring the fact that the brakes are on. This is followed by a "clonk" as the car cottons on and the box eases off.
It strikes me this might be a brake switch issue, but the brake lights appear to be functioning normally.
It's due in for some investigative work on the suspension next week (All the grace of a limping hippo again) but as always, I like to have an idea of what may be wrong when handing the car over, particularly with intermittent faults.
Thoughts? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Could it be that the box is "clunking" as it drops down from 2nd to 1st as you pull to a stop?
I can notice this in mine sometimes, but it's not too obvious.
I'm sure that there was a TSB about this issue some time ago - one of the typical "in the case of a customer noticeing........" I seem to remember that it required a software patch or something

does it drop to 1st normally...? Whenever I have left the vehicle in CommandShift it stays in 2nd gear even when stopped.
Or maybe I have a problem...? The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

This is the same symptom that my 1st d3 used to have. It would usually be first thing on a journey, with the engine and gearbox cold. It would normally occur whilst in slow moving traffic, and just like you describe, it would feel like the revs were holding up and pushing the car forwards. This would then end with a thud. It felt like someone had bumped into the back of the car.
The bad news is I never got it fixed, the dealer did not have a clue, and it was impossible to repeat to order, so I could not demonstrate it. My old car also had bad shudders, and surging revs like so many others seem to get these days. This, plus the issue that we are discussing eventually convinced me to change to the newer D3 that I currently have. Which incidentaly shows non of the above symptoms.

Alan, mine was doing a similar thing when I first purchased it. When coming to a stop it almost felt as though someone had just rear ended you
1 x Megaflush later and all was good (couldn't belive the diffrence) I thought it would have been something worse / expensive.

Thanks Gareth, interesting reading as you say.
Also useful Glynne, cheers bud. The description of feeling like you've been rear-ended is pretty accurate. Trouble with a megaflush is you don't know if it's the fluid change or the gearbox software reset that fixes things, although without doubt one or the other gets the desired result.
Lucky for me it's still in warranty, so both should be possible at the dealership. I've asked them to check the ATF and they are going to have the car overnight prior to doing any work so they can test it from cold. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Okay, I'm going to ask a stupid question here... I've seen it mentioned hundreds of times before but what exactly is a megaflush, what's LR's view on it, can I do it myself, is it only something for Land Rovers, etc etc.
