Auto down changes sluggish if momentum lost, me or the box?

2007 xs auto, 94.5k on the clocks
no lights on dash everything works as it should ( touches wood) auto/sport/command shift all work as they should

changes which are as expected on the open road but if your on quieter roads or lanes where sometimes it's not always necessary to completely stop for an oncoming car for example, the box seems to get confused if you just back off but keep moving say between 15-25 mph so when you do re apply power it has a split second identity crisis before it remembers its a gearbox and selects a gear for forward motion, usually the gear below you wanted so you get thrown in the seat which isn't pleasant for passengers.

is this me not giving the loud pedal enough boot or is it the box?

I've got a receipt for a box oil change that I had done when I bought it as part of the service but it felt exactly the same afterwards ( along with other items allegedly done... as they say vote with your feet..)

Any advice welcome.

Check the oil colour. Should be yellow gold and not black

I wonder if the Tc isn’t reengaging

This could just be normal my D3 and D4 both do this to some extent especially if you coast up to a junction find theres enough space to pull out safely put your foot down and nothing happens for what seems like a long time as it selects the right gear. I have been given a brand new D5 commercial this week to drive around in and its exactly the same.

Think you will find it is normal, well not normal but normal for the 6 speed auto!
You do get used to t, and after a few months you will have forgotten about it.

Yes they all tend to do this, even my 8 speed D4 does from time to time! Usually when I’m towing the caravan up a hill and slow for a bend.

I usually try to use command shift (paddles on the 4) to down change before I get into the situation. It is predictable.

I’ve wondered that myself as sometimes coming down the hill on the brakes the Rev counter stays at tick over as if the box has gone for neutral rather than selecting a lower gear to assist with engine braking.

Is there a dipstick like auto’s of old to check it or is it pull the plug and see what comes out job?

Cheers

Yes if I use command shift and lock It in second it climbs the hill no bother at all really but goes against the general idea of the auto if you have to change gears yourself Laughing

Thank you gents

Out of interest would a mega flush and software check/update be improve things or would it just be better to get used to it?

If it’s never been done, then yes a flush and fresh oil would be good.

some cars if you have your foot on the brake going down hill, it will automatically sense and select a low gear. Can't remember if these do

There is a level plug in the drivers side of the gearbox.

If you check it when cold, and with the engine running a small amount should come out, so you can check the colour.

If you pull the plug out, without the engine running, oil will pour out very fast!
