Will it change up in sport command mode?
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Successful repair

Swapped the linkage on our car today after it fell out of D twice.
Took only 30minutes. What a difference in gear change!
Big thank you to Disco Mikey once again for this how to with detailed photos and part numbers.

Definitely saved me lots of time and money!

This forum rocks!

Thanks for the tip

I just wanted to post my thanks to the posters above for this tip.

I had a mild panic last week as my D3 quickly developed what I thought was major gearbox fault just when we wanted it most in the snow. A couple of times the revs flared briefly on acceleration after slow turn into a side road and a day or so later this had escalated into no drive when pulling away from a roundabout, solved by cycling the lever to/from P.

Figuring it was terminal, I came on the site to see how expensive a torque-converter repair might be, found this thread and figured I'd got nothing to lose trying it (other than my fingers to frostbite).

The hardest part was releasing one of the speed clips on the gearbox cover which had seized, and I found a crusty-looking pivot bush, as described by others. Dismantled, cleaned and re-greased - it didn't need any new parts, just some emery paper and grease.
I went for a short drive (within walking distance due to my pessimism!) but the transformation is remarkable. It's absolutely back to normal and it's obvious the shift lever had been getting tighter over time, as it glides through the gate now.

This is a great forum, thanks again Thumbs Up

Thanks Mike, new linkage fitted, easy job when you know what to look for, very relieved it wasn’t anything more serious.

Yet again great advice from the forum , the lever on mine still looks new so a bit of lubrication has done the trick for me , but if it ever happens again I know exactly what's needed , cheers

Interestingly enough this has just happened to mine also, very disconcerting turning left and the revs going high an no drive engaged, thankfully another cheap repair, thanks Mikey!

Past few days trying to get Disco into Drive was becoming harder and harder, ok getting it in to reverse but not so easy for Drive.
Quick PM to Dan at Duckworths and the parts dropped thru the letterbox shortly thereafter.
I changed the entire linkage out, straight forward job and easy enough to do.

Must have been going for a while as its so much smoother now, tried to take the old linkage apart but the flanged nut will nut release from the lever.

Let me add another thanks for this posting.
My symptom was that sport mode / command shift would not engage. I was skeptical that this procedure would fix my problem because this is a mechanical part and the Sport mode / command shift is electronic. Also, my shift lever didn't feel stiff (and didn't feel noticeably different after replacing the parts for that matter). But this replacement seemed in the ballpark, good maintenance, and cheap.
Put in the new pivot last weekend, put some waterproof grease on the shaft, and now sport mode / command works! Perhaps I got lucky and jiggled some connection during R&R, but regardless, I'll post this success for purposes of thanking Mike and in case it might help somebody else.

Thanks Dirk you are a legend for posting this as I have same problem and was also not sure that a mechanical fix would solve. I head towards the job with more hope !!!!

I will post results here and my exact faults when I try the fix.

Hi, I am really hoping the problem I have with my car seemingly jumping out of gear into neutral is due to the gear linkage. My question is , the guide looks to be for the more popular diesel powered car, is the linkage the same on my petrol model ? Thanks for any help.

Had this done this week due to the classic symptoms. Wow, what a difference! The changes from P to D are so smooth and no more symptoms.

Thanks to the forum for pointing me in the right direction and thanks to my local dealer for fitting me in at such short notice before we go away for the week. Great customer service from Guy Salmon, Cosham. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Gear selector linkage

I had this linkage replaced today by Mark at Harris Mayes near Rickmansworth. Top job! The selector now slides in and out of place like a hot knife through custard. One of the cheaper jobs for my car, so thanks to all the forum users for pointing the way to the fault. Parts bill was £32+VAT and the fitting was about the same.

Gear lever linkage

Does anyone know if you can over tighten the top nut. If I tighten it to much the selector won't move.
Thanks for the help.
