I changed the factory screw fastenings for little M8 (maybe M6) hexagonal head self-tapping screws years ago.
You cannot get a socket through the panel gap and even if you could, you cannot align it to the hex pattern in order to undo them.
A mere few pence to fix. I thought I picked this trick up from this forum - not sure - been asleep since then!
Anyway - sorted "Track day running - Don't put your foot back on the accelerator until your absolutely sure you don't have to take it off again"
Current Ride: D4 XS Commercial Baltic Blue SDV6 fully loaded with heated everything
Track Days: BMW E36 M3 Evolution MY 1996 (3.2 Litre 377 BHP sat in 1,250 Kgs of car, with a pro safety cage and some serious braking power)

The screws are readily accessible through the panel gap between the tailgate and the lights. You only need a screwdriver............

I do wonder though if by changing the screws to something the theft isn't expecting are they likely to cause more damage to the vehicle trying than if they just pinched the light units with stock screws?
