I'm sure I saw it on here but cannot find it via search … is Barkeeper's Friend good for cleaning the aluminium bit of the sidesteps ?
I'm off to get the almost half-yearly wash done and thought I'd do the alli bits first as they never seem to look clean these days.
cheers.
Dean

I thought this was another joke along the lines of “a dog walks into a bar and orders a ............ “.
found the thread(s) … had to search "barkeepers" and not "barkeeper" or "barkeeper's"
gonna give it a whirl.

I’ve used Wonder Wheels cleaner on tarnished side steps when literally everything elce has failed. It works amazingly, although a heart stopper when it bubbles up on applying and with the caveat you wash it off throughly and don’t blame me if it goes t*ts up.

BKF is a great product. We get it from Lakeland store. It cleans our ovens marvellously! I reckon it would do a great job on sidesteps. Beware, it’s a bit abrasive so don’t use it on anything painted.
it's removed the worst bits, possibly "too well" as I now have shiny raw aluminium there, but it's emphasised the blotchiness of other sections.

Sure I've used Barkeepers Friend on the sidesteps. The trick may be to ensure there's loads of water on the cloth so it's not too abrasive and concentrated

I’ve come to the conclusion there’s only one answer and thats a respray with polyurethane paint, the same that is used for wheel centres It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

They will most likely have been anodised from the factory , you will have areas of deteriorated / depleted anodising and also tarnished anodising , with corrosion of the raw alloy being the milky white areas.
Most likely worst at the front and rear where stones spat up from the tyres have battered them.
Just whip them off and get them powdered for a lasting finish.
A basic rattle can job would be a mess very rapidly I would have thought., peoples feet rubbing on entry and exit and the crap thrown up through driving will have it looking tatty in no time. Procrastination is the thief of time!!
