Battery & Alternator Problems

Hoping someone can shed some light on my problem....

Traveling through a local town last night and the dash lit up like a christmas tree, special programs off etc etc car then just switched off completely leaving me without any power steering or electrics, just died, managed to bump half up on the footpate Confused

Called out a local mechanic who had a quick look around the car, I only changed the battery 2 months ago, he tested the battery for voltage etc and it seemed fine just wouldn't recharge itself and he hinted that it could be the Alternator? Managed to get it jump started and the car drove off about 50 yards then the same thing happened, complete system shutdown without any prior warning.

Any help or hints at where the problem could lie would be much appreciated, Disco is currently stranded 25 miles from my home and 60 from the nearest dealer and with no LR Assist it's proving difficult to get it recovered to the dealer. Phoned around to get a price for an Alternator aswell.. £150 + VAT but LR do not have any stock at all in the UK... so could be 24 hrs or a month before a part could be got?????

Did the local mechanic not put his amp clamp or multimeter on the battery whilst the engine was running to confirm alternator was charging ? Confused

How about loose battery connections ?

Don't forget to check where the battery -'ve lead attaches to the body. This can be a high-resistance point.

Had the RAC out.... busted Alternator, en-route to a local auto electrical specialist for a new one to be fitted with LR covering the cost Thumbs Up

Heres hoping they can find one in stock in the UK, apparently they are on backorder Neutral

Hope that mechanic who came out to you didn't charge you as you only got 50 yards down the road without checking the alternator output Whistle Shocked
