Battery drain/fitting second battery/using trickle charger
I fitted a new battery last year from tayna and also got a conditioning charger from them at the same time as the old battery was obviously past it.
My problem is that for most of the week I use the pre heater to warm the coolant for 35mins so the car warms up quicker as I swim every morning before work and I’m turning soft 😎, the pool is only 4 miles away and in the winter I’ve got heated seat on and front screen if it’s icy, it is left for an hour then I drive the four miles home grab some breakfast and the dog and drive les than a mile to my workshops, car is left for 8 hours then I drive the mile home. (I know I should walk to work lazy sod)
Longest distance I usually do a week is two trips 8miles through winding country roads, if I’m visiting customers there generally a good hours motorway drive from me but that’s 1-2 times a month.
I know this isn’t doing the car battery much good as it’s not getting the charge back it needs.
I have two questions for the more informed than me.
No 1 Tayna supplied me with their conditioning smart charger that when it knows the battery is charged goes into float charge, will it do the car or battery any damage to have this on every night as I use the other heater every morning the battery is struggling.
No 2 on occasion I have to park to far to safely put a cable to plug the charger in, can I fit a second smaller battery in the spare battery box that is always connected to the main battery thus doubling the time it takes to run the battery down.
Any advice gratefully receivedRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

A second battery with split charge relay/controller can be used to assist the starting battery if needed. Based on your usage I would suggest using the battery maintainer as this will help preserve the state of health. Short journeys with high electrical loads don't provide enough time for the battery to recover.GAP IID Pro Multi Vehicle Defender L316 2007-2015 - Discovery 3 - Discovery 4 - Discovery Sport L550 - Freelander 2 - Range Rover Evoque L538 - Range Rover L322 - Range Rover L405 - Range Rover Sport L320 - Range Rover Sport L494 Electrical Fault Diagnostics
I will start to use the charger but wanted the second battery in parallel so it provides enough volts to run the pre heater when I’m away from a socket rather than just help the starting batteryRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

Wouldn’t you just end up with 2 flattened batteries in slightly longer time thoughPete

What is the rating of the smart charger that you have?
This is what Tayna supplied

Point 2 highlights if as we are being pushed most people went over to electric cars but cannot park outside there house. The streets could have cable spaghetti over the paths That's without the National grid not being able to coup.
I don’t like having a cable to the car even on the drive, 3 kids all with bikes and a daft big dog all have caught the cable at one time or anotherRange Rover Westminster 4.4 TDV8 what a car

You can connect a second battery in parallel to the first without any problems, but the second battery space isn't as big, so while it'll run down slower as a whole, it wont last twice as long...
I went for a T-Maxx split charging system in the end, you can then run either battery down independently and use the controller to then link them together giving you that extra boost of power if/when you need it and when plugged into the charger it'll charge both Maya Gold MY05 HSE, Duratracs, RLD Sump Guard, RLD CB Aerial Mount/AE6110, RLD Spare Anti Theft, Altox FBH Remote, T-Maxx Split Charging System, Rear Power Panel, Rock Sliders...
FBH Cable available for borrowing to pay something back for all the help...
