Ooh you lucky sod, if I found a decent low miler I’d snap that up, really fancy a v8 petrol.

If you don’t mind me asking what did it go for and how did you find it?

Oh - and anyone selling a low miler let me know Thumbs Up

I've had a saved search on ebay and autotrader for a while now, so had been seeing them come and go for at least 6 months before I decided to get serious.

This one was on autotrader, garage specialising in petrol 4x4s in West London. Price was the wrong side of £10k but then if you want a D3 V8 there's a limited pool available - adding in low-mileage (which was my number one criteria over spec, colour, location, etc.) and unmolested and it becomes quite a small group to choose from.

So far it's been living up to expectations - very nice to drive, no major issues and as thirsty as I expected (but having had a 4L V8 110 I'm used to that). I've had the autobox flushed by Bodsy along with a few tweaks to the software. I'm not entirely convinced that the transmission is 100%, it seems to be 'losing' a lot of power at low speed to my mind but then my only other experience of a 6HP was in a 530i M Sport, so a lot lighter and a bit more horsepower!

To be honest when I was looking I was keen to keep it around the 100k mark. However to be honest I don't really think it matters with the V8.

Mine seems a little flat low down but that more to do with the engine characteristics and my JCW mini (230hp) which is very grunty and light, but runs out of puff at around 5500rpm.

Once the V8 start to suck the fuel and air in it takes off like a scolded cat and revs freely (for the size of the engine) up to 6000rpm.

I’ve gone backward now so the D4 went to be replaced
with a phev, A8 and a D2 v8 at 60k on a 1999, busy getting little bits done to make it pretty much perfect.

If I keep it long enough then planning a 4.6 tophat conversion although I am hankering after a late L322 5.0supercharged Mr. Green

Yes, to be honest I don't have many worries about the engine (which I why I steered clear of a TdV6!! Razz ) it's more the other moving parts that I wanted to keep low-miles on - in particular getting an autobox oil change within ZF's recommendations and hopefully having a decent bit of life in the hub bearings, prop shafts, transfer case, etc.

My last Disco was a D2 bought with 115k on the clock, but the Td5 was replaced with a new short engine by a main dealer at 75k - don't know why, my guess is the oil pump. So I had a 115k car with a 40k engine - the engine's been absolutely fine; the gearbox, wheel bearings, starter motor, air suspension, etc. have all had their moments (gearbox more than one moment in fact), which is why I wanted low-mileage this time.

It's a lovely, civilised engine in the D3, the only thing is it's maybe a bit too quiet, I like a bit of V8 burble at idle. Thinking about removing the resonator in the exhaust but I want to do something reversible as that exhaust is not cheap to replace!

I've just done the rear brake pipes, so I had to drop the exhaust system to gain access to the along the chassis rails. The previous owner has made it much easier by cutting either side of the 2nd silencer and using sliding exhaust clamps.

I started it up with just the first silencer in place to check the new pipe fittings for leaks and the car sounded wonderful with just the first box, so my plan this summer is to replace the 2nd box with two straight pipes and see what it sounds like
