BFG 265/70 X 17 - Spare stowage |
|
I run BFG 265 / 70 X 17" for off-road use.
Normally I just strap the spare down in the boot. However, this uses up valuable storage space needed for essentials like food etc.....
I've seen in a couple of posts that some people are able to store them underneath in the 'normal' carrier but try as I might I can't see just how it's done.
I've deflated it down to 10PSI but the b r still won't squeeze in between the heat shields and the rear bumper.
So.... how do you guys (especially the Oz lads) do it? Or do I have to spend mega money on an external carrier?
Cheers

Hi SB,
I have the BFG A/Ts in 265/70R17. I don't air the spare down to a specific pressure, I just deflate until it fits.
Just relax & do it.

Push it in using some brawn (the winch will not do it and/or will kill the winch). You will get the hang of it, no foreplay necessary - just do it!

After some thinking time. I remembered that I angle the wheel up into the heat shield first, before using the winch to pull the rest up.

Just out of curiosity - I've seen a few posts here about slightly larger tyres than normal - so that the spare needs to be deflated to fit.
I thought the D3 was pretty picky with its terrain response systems etc so that you needed to stick within strict size limits? I've got an SE with 18" wheels and am thinking of getting a set of 17" offroaders so just interested thanks.

The D3 indeed does not like mixing different sizes - or at least different outside diameters - on the 4 corners at the same time. I foolishly put MTRs on the rear with Pirelli Zeros on the front - the D3 slewed all over the place, then a mass of alamrs, suspension faults, and other unpleasantness followed. That said, I think some are sold with the smaller skinny spare. I haven't had problems mixing different sizes providing it's the same external diameter on all wheels and don't recall seeing any thread with anyone else having a problem either. Hi Djambalawa,
As I have coils on my D3, ie no terrain response, unable to comment.
Someone will, I'm sure, be along shortly.
Best Wishes,

Djambalawa,
Do the 17 inch thing - check my gallary, once I ditched the 18's and got some real tyres, I've been very happy.
No terrian response issues at all - I would avoid the mixed sizes thing, but no impact simply by changing size

Lol they look pretty mean Mr Andrew - what size are they? Would two of them fit on a Kaybar rear?

265/70/17. I have not done it, but I know of at least one car that is running 2 Mickey Thomson MTZ's in the same size on a Kaymar bar, so yes, they will fit.
