bi xenon help please

here we go again another issue Rolling Eyes
firstly my car is a 2012 d4 sdv6 with d4.5 headlight upgrade .
i pulled my car into the garage yesterday and i had one headlight out the n/s so i thought maybe the bulb had gone so i took the headlight out to get a part number and get a price on the euro car part site i found the bulb listed at £107 Shocked . so i put the headlight back in the car to go and get one but when refitted it was working again . i switched it on and off a dozen times switching the engine on and off ect all fine so i puts the grille back in and closes the bonnet now no headlights at all Shocked .if i turn the ignition off and back on they light up for an instant and go out .so i take it to a friend with diagnostics who says the bi xenon is activated in the ccf but theirs a load of codes regarding a short circuit .so he clears the codes and i am back to one headlight .he suggests swapping the bulbs over if the fault moves its probably the bulb if not it will be the ballast .so i get home and swap the bulbs over and again theirs no headlights at all .same again briefly on then straight out .i have tried disconnecting one headlight the same disconnect the other the same .any ideas before i go and buy bulbs and ballast modules

As I am sure many on here will tell you, before throwing money on a guess, get the codes read.

Can you plug faulty headllamp intio the other sides headlamp plug? if so see if fault moves with the headlamp.
Iirc headlamp plug wiring does sit on the inner wing, so maybe it has rubbed through somewhere?

thanks but at the moment i dont have the facility to clear the codes and im assuming thats why they are both off .im thinking i will have to bite the bullet and buy an iid tool. as for the wiring thats my first check point as it was out originally i only took the headlight out and put it back and it worked fine then i re fitted the grille and closed the bonnet and its off again .im hoping i find a broken wire or something

an update .decided to go pull it to bits and check the plug on the back with my test light side lights work so found the top middle pin was them thats fine so i check for live when i put dip beam on and nothing check the plug all wires look good . then i go into the car to switch ign off and back on again and notice the radio has shut down nothing on the screen ect .so i get in and start the engine the radio comes back on i leave the engine running and go to front of the car and the headlight still fitted is on Shocked so i left it running and re fitted the other headlight it lights up and stays on Shocked rifit the grille and close bonnet its still on .its seems to have fixed itself and working fine now .so at least i know the ballast and bulbs are ok . could the radio going off be linked to this Question

right i found the pin in the connector that goes live when i turn the lights on on both sides this pin goes live for a second then shuts off as i turn the lights on both sides .so i have disconected the bulb in one headlight and tried again this time only the side still connected shut down if i disconnect both bulbs the pin stays live with the headlights switched to the on position .so im figuring the fault is inside the headlights and as disconecting the bulb made the difference i bought and fitted a new bulb .no such luck still goes off so next is either the ballast or the control unit i have found new valeo ballast units for £64 each and can get used control units on ebay for 20 or 30 quid so thats the next move .oh well its gave me something to do for a couple of hours Rolling Eyes
