Bike rack

I have a D3 with no tow bar.

Off to Center Parcs in a month and I need to carry my bike and 2 kiddy bikes and the usual everything and the kitchen sink that the wife always packs plus baby buggy.

I can carry the bikes in the back if I take my front wheel off but there would be hardly any room for luggage.

I have searched and it seems that I need a rather expensive tow-bar fitted to the car even before I shell out on a bike rack.

Is there any other way as I would rather use my bike rather than the hire bikes at the Parc but at £20 for the rental as opposed to hundreds for a system to carry the bikes it seems the bicycles will have to stay at home.

Never thought I would say this but the Discovery is just not big enough for a growing family of 5.

Take heed the Green Activists who keyed my car, I'm looking for something thirstier and bigger. Laughing

Do you have roof rails/bars? You could put then on the roof.

Probably best to get a tow bar from eBay. I've seen some sell for £99. They just plug in, so you could then add a cheap rack. You should use a lighting plate, but of course you'll have no electrics. If you've just got one adult bike, and it's just for this one trip, you could just risk it. The D3 lights will be visible okay, so it wont be unsafe. Maybe worth just adding a second numberplate in the bike rack though.
Look at the Thule RideOn rack in my Gallery http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=435
It's cheap and works well. The two bike version only costs £70 and comes with the lights etc.
Have a look at http://www.roofbox.co.uk/bkchome.html for this and other bike racks.

PS. If you get a tow bar, you can always sell it on when you've finished with it. They fit both the D3 and RRS, so there are plenty of people after them. You may even make a profit on it!

Thanks for the advice. Looks like I could get a roof rack and bike carrier for less than £120.

But, sorry to be dim, how does it attach to the D3's roof? There appears to be a plastic strip but do I have to remove all of it?

Thanks for any info, ta.

Ahhhh! had a look at a few member gallerys, I forgot about the roof rails.

Derrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Sometimes they go for less.... Wink

Yes, you need roof rails too. They are easy to fit (diy).

I bought a Thule for swan neck tow bars (like the removable one from LR). Fits great and stays put even over rough ground.

Carries three bikes.

Just need to tighten the hell out of it though.

Halford's and quite inexpensive.
