Binding noise, rear wheel
Hi, Firstly I am new to this forum and my Discovery 3!
I've had my Discovery 3 TDV6 Auto for 3 weeks (115,000 miles). Yesterday I noticed a binding noise coming from the back wheel, passenger side at low speed. Like the brakes are tight. No noise from the drivers side. It also feels a bit like the ABS is kicking in when I brake (in normal circumstances when it shouldn't). I looked up the symptoms on google and one forum suggested the noise may be the spring on the parking brake broken? With a heavy heart, I went to bed and hoped by the following morning (today) it would have gone away.. all a bad dream... but no. Still there - Any ideas? could it 'just' be the spring? For the record, I did pop it into neutral as I was driving along and the noise was still there (as suggested)
TIA

Hello.
What a nice location you live in.
Rear brakes are a real pain on these cars.
The brake calipers stick. There is a groove just behind the rubber seal where dirt collects and prevents movement. Although usually the fix is to put a new caliper on as they are cheap.
Parking brakes also cause problems. The leaver needs lubrication (after strip down)

Thanks Pete. Rather than change it (Christmas looming, my location....and all that nonsense.....) is it possible to clean as a temporary solution? I really don't have much history with the car.... long story. My son is a agricultural mechanic - something he can do in his lunch hour.... ? (tomorrow, but don't tell him)
Heres the car by the way, on our maiden voyage back to France

its certainly easy to remove the caliper from the hub (leaving pipe attached)
try and push the piston back, to see if its smooth or stuck.
slightly peal back the rubber by piston and see if you can see a groove with dirt in and clean out.
Refit to car and pump brake pedal.
in the early stages, rotate the hub to see if you can deduce if its the caliper or parking shoes.
There is a lot of drive train to move though

ok, so back brake pads worn right down (but no dash warning??), I've bought some pads locally from a motor factor. Now been advised its a good idea to buy new discs too - wheres the best place for mail order - good prices and with an overnight or 2 day delivery to france? Any ideas? Son suggests Paddock Spares (we are a landrover family but theirs are Britpart and hubby thinks they aren't the best (and I really don't want to pay £165 each plus for the better ones they offer) Any ideas folks

Fit the pads you have bought to keep you mobile until you have time to do the job properly with OEM components that are available from site sponsor AF, parking brake shoes and new spring retaining clips would be a good idea while it is stripped down.
Regardless of what people say the parking brake is not troublesome if maintained correctly, OMHO it is one of the wonders of the Disco. Check Bodsy's Brake Bible out it is found in the D3 wiki.
p.s. Don't be like me and forget to use the forum discount code when ordering and you may not have to pay UK VAT on the order, best check that out. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
I had the same a short while ago and it turned out to be an EPB issue which despite adjustment eventually lead to the EPB locking on and I had to pull the release cable and have new shoes fitted along with discs and pads.
I also just prior had a vibration through the whole truck at about 20 mins into any drive no matter what speed that lasted 30 seconds then never repeated on any same journey
turned out some spring had broken and caused a shoe to start grinding into the hub .
are the wheels very warm after any short trip that will indicate any bind of some sort mine got luke warm and I thought it was ok the new set stay cool.
Hope you sort it
Phil.

Will report in when mobile again

Thanks for your help guys, new pads, discs and calipers on the back now and did a 700km round trip yesterday, all fine.
I really like this forum, such a helpful bunch and no snide comments or backbiting (like there can be on similar social medial pages)
