Biting the bullet and getting a garage to repair my D3 |
|
I’ve given up on the hope of repairing my D3’s suspension issues myself and booked it into a Land Rover specialist.
I’ve had issues with the compressor and ride height sensors, I’ve replaced the sensors (used) and replaced the moisture beads and seals etc in the compressor and it only seems to have made the issue worse.
She goes in on Tuesday for repair, but I want to gauge the average cost of paying a garage to supply and fit a new compressor and ride height sensor, and potentially valves and airlines etc.
Have any of you had similar repairs, and what did it cost? 12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

How long is a piece of string ???
Trouble shooting can be time consuming.
Probably looking at around £50-60 per hour for an Inde + VAT. Maybe cheaper if you mention proper money as method of payment Relocated to Mid France from N. Wales March 2021

I had an issue with the front dropping over night and when lifted into off road I could hear air expelling
Lower back down not a sign off the air leaking till over night it was self sealing in the creases of the strut
So in it went to my local indie , pound notes job.
He replaced the front air struts for 260 each
Got home same issue over night ,so take it back and he spent a while chasing a possible leak in the lines and valve block
I suggest one of the bags could faulty ,he agreed but his supplier would not listen saying they had never had a Dunlop strut returned faulty , turned out the strut had a pin hole leak .
So the supplier has heard of one now
The moral is to give some idea for your guy to start from and pay without you know who having a slice

Am I the only person who read the thread title and thought "there's a man buying/renting/building a garage!? I'd hoped you were living the dream! A "normal" house with a double height garage you can put a 2 post lift inside!

Yeah after re-reading it I can see why you’d think that, but unfortunately there is no new garage on the horizon. Literacy has never been something I excel at.
Anyway, the Disco went in Friday (later than hoped because of work commitments). Diagnosis to take place Monday morning but I’m fully expecting a new compressor to be on the list of parts.
I had hoped to repair things myself, but without an IID I’m only guessing what needs to be done. I’d rather pay a specialist get it done right until I have the tools. 12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

If you factored in buying a gap lld or the Autel and then fixed it yourself it may have still worked out cheaper Andrew

I have both the Autel and IID tool, I can confirm that the Autel will do you for most things including depressurising the Air tank. It’s a rather handy tool until you can buy the IID.

I have good news! I picked the disco up today and it’s like they’ve given me a different car!
I have a new Hitachi compressor, relay, compressor housing, air lines and ride height sensor.
It turns out the car was originally fitted with AMK (I was under the impression it still was) that someone had replaced with Hitachi, in doing so they butchered the plastic housing and kinked the airlines.
The garage reckons the kink + knackered casing led to the compressor running longer and harder than it should. The casing had also let in mud and dirt to cake the compressor making it overheat.
While it was there they also sorted my tracking and investigated a leak in my power steering system (cracked pump housing!! )
Total cost was a few quid under £800 and I didn’t think that’s too bad. 12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!

May be worth checking with them that they also upgraded the firmware for the new compressor. LR dealer replaced my compressor but didn't update the firmware; the vehicle occasionally threw a light; I changed the firmware using the IID tool and it was perfect thereafter. PAGODA

He mentioned something about resetting the car during the calibration of the suspension, may not be what you mean so I think I’ll give them a call.
Overall I’m very happy with their service and prices. They’ve also been good to me in the past when I’ve been in need of parts (calliper hangers and air hoses). Next day delivery and priced to match what I could find online
PS; the garage is called Overland, Land Rover specialist just outside Methwold, Norfolk. 12 months of D3 ownership have passed and I’m still loving it!
