Black Smoke
Not that old chestnut!
I have read dozens of posts re: black smoke but still need the help of others as I don't know what the problem is.
I have changed the intercooler hose and can hear the egrs clicking when the engine is switched off and I don't suffer from any noticeable power loss but I still blow loads of black smoke on kick down or when under load, say going up a steep hill. Had to embarrassingly yield to a ford kuga when going up hill after covering him in soot, at 80+ mph
Any ideas? How would I check the turbo and/or the intercooler for possible leaks? Interestingly I noticed that in a strong headwind I.e. More air flowing into the front of the car there was no smoke and more power at 80+.
Thank you.Java Black Metropolis MY06

Have you checked the air filter box and the element?
My box was full of leaves and the filter was black....so check that 1st
Also have a go at cleaning the MAF sensor which can get 'gummed up' with black sludge.

Nope he's done that, maybe a leak at a joint (but I doubt that); maybe one of the EGR valves is on it's way out ?? process of elimination one by one, start with cheapest/easiest and work your way towards TFC or Stealer time Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!
If you look at the bottom right corner of the photo you will see where the main feed from the IC meets the 'Y' assembly, there is a metal clip, it conveniently has a yellow line pointing to it, this clip locates on tabs on the 'Y' assembly, the right hand one of which had broken on mine leaving some sooty gunk around the joint, apparently quite common, this however can cause a lack of boost pressure due to the leak.
Worth taking a look at.I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

Ok, so today I have checked the main IC hose and found drips of oil at the bottom and streaks of oil under the car. The hose was secure but not fully seated on the outlet from the IC. I took it off, cleaned up the outlet and re-connected. Definitely less smoke on kick down. Booted it in sports mode and still some smoke but not as black. Question: should I expect a 100% improvement, smoke free, immediately? Or does it take few trips to clear completely?
Also check the air filter. Seems pretty clean to me but then I don't know how dirty it has to be to affect air flow.Java Black Metropolis MY06

Yeah - mine still kicked out a little black stuff immediately after fitting my new IC hose, but it soon disappeared...2001 D2 GS (I must be mad!)

Ok, so i'm getting frustrated now.
Thought I had cured the problem but no.
I have now checked the turbo to intercooler hose and that seems to be ok, I couldn't feel any splits but it is a bit of a bu**er to get to so there was no visual inspection.
I still have black smoke, and loads of it, with no hesitation and as far as I can tell no loss of power.
Any ideas? Have almost given up and am waiting for a call back from Hunters, Guildford to book it in.

From my limited dealings with them in the past that could be a long wait ... suggest you give Guava a call instead The End

I currently have exactly the same problem as you.
The dealer did a smoke test on the induction system and said that there were no leaks.
There were also no fault codes logged.

From reading your posts i agree with above that it will be worth checking your intercooler for splits, ive seen this happen a few times now.
If you inspect the engine side of the intercooler by shining a torch down through the fan from the top you can just see the rear side of the cooler, most ive seen have also leaked oil from the split so you may find it easy if this is the case.
Also check that the intercooler fins are not blocked with mus snd silt from any offroadig the car may have done.
