When I started the car, plugged in the iid bt tool. It was reading 14.2 volts.

Can I plug a charger while the battery is still fitted to the car?

Yes you can. If the alternator was goosed there is a potential for the battery to be as well. At the very least you need to charge the battery fully and also re check the voltage form the alternator.

Right then chaps, need more advice if you would please....?

Battery on charge overnight, reading 100% on display. Put it back in car, plugged the charger on aswell, to keep topped up while I play with iid bt tool, to clear fault codes.

At first, it was playing silly Censored , and would not clear codes, would not register that the ignition was on, so disconnected tool and battery, did a hard reset, all back together, plug iid tool back on. Cleared the fault codes, voltage reading 14.2, happy days me thinks...!

Drive across town to my mates garage, to return a couple of tools, and guess what.....? YES indeed, f***ing bong, everything starts shutting down again, same as before. AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH. Censored

While it was running, he put the tester on.
Battery = Good, 13.92v, healthy, 116% 1045 A(SAE)
Alternator = Good, v max 13.99v (brand new Denso)

So what now, new battery and alternator, and it is still chucking up faults mainly relating to lost comms, can bus, signal failure etc...? Any ideas please?

You need to go back to basics, start by replacing the brake switch and change the rear brake bulbs for new good quality bulbs even if they currently appear to be ok.

Then see if you can cause the voodoo to reappear.

You've not recently had the engine steam cleaned or jet washed have you?

I can quite easily change the bulbs out, do you think that maybe a cause? No jet or steam wash here mate, just normally lovingly washed by hand, but starting to lose the love at the minute, so a bit dirty...! Whistle

Brake bulbs have been known to drive the electrics into all sorts of weird and wonderful trickery pretty much like that which you're experiencing so to replace them cannot do any harm, brake switch similar.

When you get the car running, you need to start switching things on and off etc. to see what is causing your voodoo.

Ok, thanks mate, I will have a look at those. I did replace the front side lights, and reverse lights for LED bulbs, but that was months ago.

The other thing that you mention, everything is switched off at the minute, and it is still doing it, without turning anything on.

Check the earth wire connections particularly the one from chassis to the engine.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I think you need to be looking for water ingress into the can bus wiring, or another wiring problem.

Others may be able to elaborate, but the common areas to check are the transmission control unit which is an Ecu situated behind the battery. I think you need to remove the battery to get to it. It had a large plug. The pins on this plug can corrode if moisture gets in. Classic problem to occur after jet washing the engine bay too enthusiastically!

The big exposed multi plug at the rear of the left hand rear wheel arch also has been a problem for others. As has a plug behind the front left wheel arch liner.

Some have reported water getting into the central junction box (CJB) from a detached sunroof drain.

Sorry but it could be tricky to find the problem area.

Right then, still no further forward.. Big Cry

Gareth, thank you mate, I took out the battery, and checked all the plugs behind there, the ecu one, and all the others that were accessible. All contacts were spotless and no signs of corrosion at all, but all got a good squirt of electrical contact cleaner.

I also checked behind the glove box, and no signs of water ingress what so ever. The cabin filter is bone dry, (could be changed as a bit grubby Whistle )

While I had the battery out, I did another hard reset, then when put back on, cleared codes, started the engine and left to tick over. Did not switch anything on, and after about 4-5 minutes, it starts again. The all too common click, the dash goes blank, sat nav and stereo shut down, hazards are on. Switch engine off, will not restart, try to clear codes, and there are 4 codes that will not clear.

Update

Right guys and gals, bit of an update....!

I THINK......., I may of fixed it...! Thumbs Up

I am the kind of person that hates to be beaten Whistle I get wound up if I cannot work out or fix something. After asking and following lots of advice from this thread, I was, unfortunately, no further forward, and really frustrated. Big Cry

So, to recap, driving along, then all of a sudden,

Little click heard,
dash went blank,
sat nav/ 4x4 info screen shut down,
stereo shut down with message 'vehicle fault, system shutting down,
hazards start flashing, with no green lights and cannot turn off,
reverse lights on,
no indicators,
engine running fine UNTIlL I switched it off. Then it would not restart, and loads of messages on dash like,
HDC fault,
Park brake fault, etc etc

So plug in IID tool, and loads of codes registered, try to clear them, but 4 codes will not clear. ( see above)

Test battery, showing FUBAR, so change for new one.

Test alternator, showing FUBAR, so change for a new one (denso)

Still cannot clear 4 codes, and car will now start what so ever.

Spent today, after advice from here, and mechanic friends, and stripped everything that I could see or get my hands on. Any plug I could get to, got taken apart, checked for damage or corrosion, cleaned and re-assembled. Any wire that was visible or touchable, got inspected, all earth terminals that I came across, got the same treatment. Put it all back together, and still nothing...! Censored

I throw my toys out of the pram, and walk away. Big Cry

My mate asks, 'how easy is it to remove the instrument cluster?' So after a quick search on here, find a picture guide,

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic115562....er+removal

and go back out to remove.

I only go and find the root cause of my major headache.....! Thumbs Up

The plug that goes into the back of the cluster, is not only loose, but the clip that holds it in, is broken on one side. (suspicious Whistle Whistle ) Take it off, blow it clean, re-attach, and happy days, all the codes clear, car starts, and drives lovely, and no fault re-appears....! Thumbs Up Bow down Thumbs Up Bow down

I have for now, made sure sure the plug does not come loose again with 'Gorilla tape' but this is of course a temporary fix, and will look into replacing asap.

In hindsight, the codes that I could not clear, were relating to instrument cluster, but was dreading a complete failure of the cluster so was trying to find another cause. Whistle

Thanks to all that offered assistance, and hope this may help some one in the future. Thumbs Up
